The Ho Man Tin Student Hostel project will provide more than 1,200 modern and comfortable hostel places for students. The design of the hostel aims to enhance the whole-person development of students by offering a supportive and nurturing environment that will enable them to thrive academically and personally.

The fully furnished rooms are tailored to meet the needs of contemporary students. The ample common areas, lounge spaces and green areas provide opportunities for students to connect with each other and build supportive communities. With these features, the Ho Man Tin Student Hostel will be an ideal living and learning for the University’s thriving students community.

Design Concept – where form meets function, and nature meets architecture

The building seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings with two wind corridors from the north-south and east-west directions, creating an environment that offers green elements at every level. Inspired by nature, the open stepped terraces, landscape areas and the green lawn enhance the environmental experience throughout the Hostel. The unique design creates a harmonious balance between the hostel and the natural world, providing a space that is both visually attractive and environmentally friendly. It will be a place to inspire creativity, promote collaboration or simply a place to enjoy hostel lives.

A range of sustainable features are introduced to achieve optimal energy efficiency:

  • Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) with sun shading device: reducing demands on air-conditioning.
  • Green roof system: providing a pleasant building outlook while reducing the heat island effect.

Sustainability – Redeveloping and revitalising brownfield sites

In response to the growing demands and limited land resources, PolyU has embarked on a campus expansion project that includes academic and research facilities, as well as students’ accommodation, all while embracing sustainable development practices. The University has been granted a brownfield site on the previously built-up Ho Man Tin Slope by the Government to facilitate this expansion.

  • Brownfield Development

By repurposing this previously developed site, PolyU is able to maximise the utilisation of existing land resources and avoid encroaching on undisturbed green spaces.

  • Utilities Realignment and Integration

The Ho Man Tin Slope area was previously occupied by various utility structures. As part of this project, the University has carried out comprehensive utilities realignment and integration to prepare the site for redevelopment. This process ensures the efficient and sustainable use of the land while minimising disruption to existing infrastructure.

  • Commitment to Sustainability

By embracing sustainable practices in the redevelopment of this brownfield site, PolyU demonstrates its commitment to responsible campus expansion that maximises land use, optimises infrastructure, and fosters a sustainable campus life for students’ well being.
