A group of 20 students from SKH Tsang Shiu Tim Secondary School were invited to visit our department on 30 June 2021.  They enjoyed the “Tower Building Challenge” and visit to Structural Engineering Research Laboratory.

Ir Prof. C.S. Poon Conferred Endowed Professorship in Civil Engineering

Ir Prof. C.S. Poon, Chair Professor of Sustainable Construction Materials and Head of CEE, has recently been appointed as Michael Anson Professor in Civil Engineering under PolyU’s Endowed Professorship Scheme.   Supported by a donation from Able Engineering Co. Ltd., the endowed professorship is a significant recognition bestowed upon the distinguished scholars with outstanding academic and research achievements. The Scheme provides funding and support to help the appointed Professors strive for excellence in their respective disciplines.

Newly Launched Elsevier Journal Led by Dr Zhen Leng

A new Elsevier journal, Cleaner Materials, was officially launched in May 2021. Dr Zhen Leng, Associate Professor of CEE, and Dr Baoshan Huang of University of Tennessee have been appointed as the founding Editor-in-Chiefs of this new journal. The Associate Editor team is composed of world-known researchers from various esteemed universities, such as National University of Singapore, Royal Institute of Technology, RWTH Aachen University, TU Delft, University of Hong Kong, and Zhejiang University.    Cleaner Materials is an international, cross-disciplinary companion journal to Journal of Cleaner Production, where Dr Zhen Leng serves as an Executive Editor. It publishes original full-length research articles, short communications and reviews in applied or fundamental science of physical, chemical, mechanical, and user experience aspects of cleaner and sustainable materials with special attention to contributions that reduce the knowledge gap between materials and sustainability.     For more details, please visit: https://www.journals.elsevier.com/cleaner-materials/.

CEE Departmental Visit Series – Tak Nga Secondary School (16 Jun)

The first visit from Tak Nga Secondary School was successfully held on 16 June 2021. A programme talk and laboratory visits were arranged for students to know more about CEE and our academic programmes.  Students were also spilt into groups to join the “Tower Building Challenge” to build a free-standing tower using only straws and tapes.  The group with the highest tower that can hold a designated load for 3 seconds is the champion.

The research team of Prof. Yi-Qing Ni has developed Optical Fibre Sensing Technology which was implemented on railway systems to monitor railway operational safety. Dr Tony Sze invited to speak on RTHK Radio Program

Dr Tony Sze was invited by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) to speak on a RTHK Radio 3's current affairs programme, Backchat, on 14 July 2021 (Wed).   As Hong Kong insurers have called for taxi black boxes to track drivers' behaviour in order to deal with the skyrocketing premiums, the taxi industry complains about the skyrocketing insurance rates, with the average annual premiums rising by more than 20%.  The discussion covered whether black boxes would help monitor bad driving and slash the number of road accidents. 2021 Willi H. Hager Best Reviewer Award

Congratulations to Dr H.F. Duan for getting the 2021 Willi H. Hager Best Reviewer Award established by International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) Council.  The award  is made biennially to up to three reviewers preferably under 45 years of age judged to provide most outstanding reviews of the papers submitted to the Journal of Hydraulic Research during the preceding two-year period.

A student of BEng (HONS) Civil Engineering, Mr NG Ming Ho, has been awarded the AECOM Prize for Best Student of the Year 2020. This AECOM Prize is presented to students with outstanding performance in geotechnical subjects in local universities that offer eligible undergraduate programmes accredited by the HKIE for Scheme “A” training in the geotechnical discipline.
