New Joiner - Dr Tong Haijie

Dr Tong Haijie - Research Assistant Professor   Dr Tong received his PhD degree in Physical Chemistry from Beijing Institute of Technology, China, in 2011. From 2009 to 2010, he studied in Bristol University as a Joint PhD student with the government scholarship of CSC. After graduation, he joined the Department of Chemistry at University of Cambridge as a PDRA (2012-2014). Then he moved to Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) in Germany as a research scientist (2014-2016) and team leader (2017-2020).   Dr Tong and co-workers have explored the multiphase chemistry of ambient particulate matter and laboratory-generated secondary organic aerosols, by using state-of-the-art instruments and kinetic models. Dr Tong has led/participated in several atmospheric field campaigns and laboratory measurement projects on radical chemistry and health effects of biogenic and anthropogenic particles. He has collaborated with various groups in the UK, US and Europe, and has 27 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He serves as reviewer for more than ten scientific journals in the atmospheric and aerosol research fields. Dr Tong has joined us on 21 December 2020.

CEE Scholars’ Work on “A Smarter Radiative Cooler” Recommended by Science Editor’s Choice

Prof. Jian-Guo Dai’s research team, which includes Dr Xiao XUE, Research Fellow of Prof. Dai’s group, focuses on engineering inexpensive coating materials for buildings. It takes advantage of daytime radiative cooling but suppress it in the night when cooling no longer is needed. This is accomplished by widening the emissivity spectrum over the entire mid-infrared range. The strategy also uses common materials for the coatings that are more likely to withstand long-term weathering. Their work was recommended by Science Editor’s Choice. More details can be found at https://science.sciencemag.org/content/370/6522/twil.
