My three years of university education so far has been a transformative journey. Along the way, I have been able to craft my own story that is characterised by a mosaic of opportunities for growth, service, and pursuing goals. Rooted in an unwavering aspiration to become a "global engineer," I pursued a multifaceted approach to self-improvement. Balancing rigorous academics with holistic personal development, I endeavoured to build a robust foundation in civil engineering while actively seeking opportunities for refinement.
During my internships at Arup and AECOM, I confronted many crucibles and challenges that taught me to conquer my weaknesses with a sense of unwavering resolve. I gained invaluable insights for personal and professional growth. These experiences not only fortified my technical skills but also fostered resilience and adaptability essential in the world of engineering.
After joining Engineers Without Borders (Hong Kong), I have dedicated myself to serving communities both locally and globally. Driven by a fervent commitment to societal betterment and sustainability, I sought to embody PolyU's noble motto: “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”.
The receipt of the Outstanding Student Award is a profound honour, as it validates the years of dedication and perseverance while fuelling my determination to pursue excellence. It serves as a poignant reminder to remain humble, open-minded and optimistic as I navigate the vast landscape of opportunities that lie ahead.
I extend my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to PolyU, especially my department, for their unwavering support and guidance throughout my journey of growth and discovery.
To delve deeper into soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, I went on a year-exchange at Imperial College London. This experience has been nothing short of extraordinary, for it afforded me the privilege to learn from luminaries in the field. I am also glad that I can finish my final year project on the distortion and displacement of tunnel, under the supervision Prof. Jamie Standing, whom I admire.
This journey of academic inquiry promises not only to expand my technical expertise but also to cultivate a deeper understanding of the profound impact engineering can have on our world.
