Research Overview

His research mainly focuses on computational structural engineering, steel structures, steel and concrete composite structures, and applied research in structural engineering.

Education and Academic Qualifications

Dr Liu obtained his PhD from CEE of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and BEng from Sun Yat-Sen University.

Academic and Professional Experience

Dr. Siwei Liu specializes in steel structures, second-order direct analysis, high-rise buildings, and computational structural mechanics. His research aims to address the design challenges of modern building structures. His work contributes to the National Design Specifications, such as the American Steel Code ANSI/AISC 360-22, a key national standard for steel structures in the United States. He has co-developed several structural analysis and design software, including MSASect2 (www.msasect.com), RCD2016, NIDA10 and Mastan2-v5. These are used in practical projects and by leading research groups in China, Singapore, and the USA. Dr. Liu received a Grand Award in Research in 2020 from HKIE, a Commendation Award in Research in 2018 from HKIE, and another Grand Award in Research in 2016 from the joint structural division of HKIE and IStructE.
