Speaker : Ms Tan Jingbo
Ms Tan Jingbo is a Chinese opera theorist specializing in the study of Yu opera. She graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Zhengzhou University and the Department of Literature at the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. She is currently a researcher of the Henan Culture and Art Research Institute, an Executive Director of the Chinese Opera Association, the Chairman of Chinese Opera Association of Henan Province and the Vice Chairman of the Chinese Opera Artist Association of Henan Province. Her book publications include Directing and Performing Arts of Yu Opera, Introduction to the Culture of Yu Opera, Yu Opera – Readings for Traditional Chinese Art, and Encyclopaedia of Cultures of Central China: Literature, Art and Dance.
Performance Group : Youth Troupe of Henan Yu Opera Theatre
The Youth Troupe of Henan Yu Opera Theatre was established in June 2013, with the aim of nurturing young artists of Yu opera. Its core members were selected from the first batch of graduates majoring in Yu opera at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, including outstanding performers such as Wu Suzhen, Zhu Xuguang, Li Duowei, Guo Qingfeng, Lu Junshuai, Yang Liming, Du Yongzhen and Chen Tingting. The Troupe conducted a further open recruitment exercise across the country in November 2013. Some of the musicians recruited were graduates from leading institutes, including the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, Xian Conservatory of Music, Wuhan Conservatory of Music, and Henan University. Newly recruited performers like Sun Jingming, Du Yongzhen, Chen Tingting, Wang Meijuan, Guo Xiaopeng and Sun Yang have won gold awards in many inter-college competitions in China.
The Troupe’s new opera Mu Guiying Leads the Army to War earned the Gold Award at the 3rd Chinese Yu Opera Festival in 2014, and The White Snake received the Outstanding Repertoire Award in the 13th Henan Provincial Drama Competition. Other well received operas in the Troupe’s repertoire include Mu Guiying Leads the Army to War, Raising the Siege of Hongzhou, The Breezy Pavilion, Five Daughters Offering Felicitations, The Cosmo Sword, Looking for Son, Mu Guiying Coming Down from Mountain, and Executing Qin Ying. Operas from their traditional repertoire are also popular, including The Monkey King Wreaks Havoc in Heaven, Xiaoshang River, Finding the Jade Bangle, Carrying the Wedding Palanquin, Li Kui Visiting Mother, and Beating with a Gold Brick.
Henan Yu Opera Theatre
Henan Yu Opera Theatre was established in March 1956, with renowned Yu opera artist Chang Xiangyu as the Director and Zhou Qizhi as the Deputy Director. The Theatre was one of the eight major theatres then in China and supervised three performing groups. Among them, one focused on performances of traditional operas, another concentrated on newly revised historical operas, and the remaining one mainly performed modern operas. During the Cultural Revolution, performances by the three groups were suspended until 1978. In 1985, they were named No. 1 Troupe, No. 2 Troupe and No. 3 Troupe of Henan Yu Opera Theatre. In 2013, the three troupes were combined as one under the name Henan Yu Opera Theatre, with Li Shujian as the Director and Wang Quanzhen as the Secretary of the Party Committee. Their major task is perform adapted traditional operas and newly written modern pieces.
The operas adapted or written by the Theatre, such as Cheng Ying Saving the Orphan of Zhou’s, The Breezy Pavilion, Woman from the Lake of Scented Souls, Chang Xiangyu, Village Official Li Tiancheng, Su Wu the Shepherd, Jiao Yulu, Old Home, and Madam Wei Jing, have earned top awards including the Wenhua Award from the Ministry of Culture, the National Fine Stage Arts Project Award, and the Five “One” Project Award from the Central Propaganda Department. The performers of the Theatre have received the Wenhua Performance Award of the Ministry of Culture 18 times, and 13 performers have received the Plum Blossom Award of Chinese Opera.
