Summary

“Tales of Two Cities – The History of Hong Kong and Guangzhou” consists of a talk series and a cultural tour and it aims to enrich the participants’ understanding of the history of these two neighbouring cities and their interaction with the western world.
 

“Hong Kong in the Eyes of Passers-by”
10 November 2015 (Tuesday)

The talk will start with stories from the early 19th century.  The talk will include the appearance, history and culture of Hong Kong during its early days through observations by different passers-by including artists, missionaries, politicians, travellers, writers and more. Rare photos of old Hong Kong will be presented.
 

“Guangzhou: Southern Gateway to China and the Port of Departure for the Maritime Silk Road”
18 November 2015 (Wednesday)
6:30-8:30pm
Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The talk will reveal the important role of Guangzhou in its early days of trading with the western world.

“A Historical Tour of Guangzhou”
2-3 January 2016 (Saturday - Sunday)

Also led by Dr Ting, the tour will bring participants to historical buildings including churches, temples, graveyards and more to help them understand the history of Guangzhou.

About Dr Joseph Ting Sun-pao:
Dr Joseph Ting Sun-pao was born in Guangzhou and is a native of Fengshun County in Guangdong. He acquired his BA, M.Phil and PhD from the University of Hong Kong. Prior to his retirement, he was the Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History and played a vital role in the planning of the new Hong Kong Museum of History, the Museum of Coastal Defense and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum.

He is currently an Adjunct Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Comparative and Public History, Department of History, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Expert Adviser of the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Museum of History; member of the Antiquities Advisory Board; trustee of the Lord Wilson Heritage’s Trust;  Vice-President of the Local Gazetteer Office; Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society; Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Education; Honorary Fellow of the University of Hong Kong; and adviser to a number of cultural institutions in Hong Kong and on the Mainland.
