Summary

Join us on an inspiring journey through time as we delve into the rich history of the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (hereafter referred to as "PolyU Design" or "the School") over the past sixty years.

As the renowned professor Jay Doblin (1920-1989) once said, "a product is frozen information." Designers continually strive to capture the economic, social, technological, and cultural nuances of their era, embedding these values into their creations. By examining design products from different periods, we can unlock the essence of the times that shaped them. Similarly, this exhibition allows us to reflect on how PolyU Design has evolved, mirroring the changing values and paradigms of design education across different eras.

The “Time-capsuled Histories: Six Decades of PolyU Design” Exhibition examines the developmental path of PolyU Design, showcasing its evolution through visual and systematic mapping. It reveals the historical development of the School and its profound impact on Hong Kong's design education landscape. The research team dedicated over a year to interviewing dozens of individuals from various eras and sectors, each with differing degrees of connection to the School’s development. In addition to utilising the School's internal collections, they sourced valuable materials and artefacts from alumni and many other channels. Through these efforts and the team's meticulous organisation, editing, and design, this significant initiative has come to fruition.

As Hong Kong's first comprehensive design institution, PolyU Design has deeply influenced countless graduates, extending its impact across various fields. This exhibition enriches our understanding of the School's history while contributing to a broader narrative of design development in Hong Kong. The timeline chronicles the evolution of design education, tracing PolyU Design's journey from the Hong Kong Technical College to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, capturing responses to shifting industry policies, social technological advancements, and insights from thought leaders.

The exhibition is divided into five sections: headship mapping, curriculum development, research development, alumni design works, and a showcase of publications. Each section offers a unique perspective on the School's evolution and contributions. We invite you to explore the legacy and future of design education in Hong Kong while celebrating the remarkable journey of PolyU Design, where the past inspires the present and motivates the future.
