The Outstanding Alumni/Young Alumni Award of PolyU Faculty of Construction and Environment is a faculty level award to recognise alumni’s professional achievements and significant contributions to the community and their alma mater. There are four achievement categories under the Award, namely Professional Achievement, Entrepreneurial Achievement, Scholarly Achievement and Community Service Achievement.

Outstanding Alumni Award in Entrepreneurial Achievement

Ir Mo is the founder and Managing Director of Telemax Environmental and Energy Management Limited. Since the company’s establishment in 2009, Ir Mo has steered the firm’s growth from a local consultancy in Hong Kong and Mainland China to an internationally recognised firm specialising in construction, mechanical and electrical engineering, green buildings, environmental protection, sustainable energy development, and carbon emission reduction. 

 

Ir Mo’s commitment to innovation is evident through the development of an AI-based carbon management platform and an energy audit app she pioneered, which have significantly enhanced project efficiency. Her leadership has earned the company numerous prestigious awards, including the 2023 Green Building Award and the Hong Kong’s Most Outstanding Business Awards 2020. In addition to being acknowledged for her expertise and influence in the industry, Ir Mo has also contributed her expertise to academia by taking up various scholarly roles such as lecturer and textbook editor, further solidifying her impact on sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Outstanding Alumni Award in Professional Achievement

 

Ir Wong, Head of the Civil Engineering Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), has over 30 years of experience in civil, coastal and environmental engineering. Apart from land and infrastructural development to provide public housing and public fill management, he has overseen the construction and maintenance of port facilities, conducted technical studies on reclamation projects, and led research and development to enhance the design and maintenance standards of marine structures. He has also contributed significantly to technical publications regarding port works design and coastal resilience in the face of climate change. Under his leadership, CEDD has collaborated with PolyU on research studies to improve industry efficiency and support Hong Kong's carbon neutrality goals. His innovative work includes technology to enhance construction waste sorting, field studies of beneficial reuse of public fill and dredged materials, trial applications of new materials in marine structures and building structures, and design guidelines for various engineering applications. Ir Wong is currently serving on the CEE Department Advisory Committee.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Professional Achievement

 

Ir Dr Kwok is the Chief Operating Officer of Wah Tung Holdings Limited. He is a highly accomplished professional with diverse qualifications and experience in engineering and construction. He has played a key role in developing operational systems and promoting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives. He has spearheaded the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as early as 2014 and successfully implemented an ESG strategy at Wah Tung. His successful development of a Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) production line and the application of cutting-edge engineering approaches, including an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system at Wah Tung, earned him recognition from The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers with the Young Engineer of the Year Award 2024. Ir Dr Kwok's impact on the industry and society is further demonstrated through his active roles in different professional and educational institutions and contribution to fostering a connection between the young generations and the industry. As the founder of Insquare Foundation Limited, he supports young minds from underprivileged families in developing their programming skills. His innovative approach and dedication to sustainable development have earned him a reputation as a leader in the engineering and construction field.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement

 

Prof. Song is a professor and the head of the Complex Phase Change Thermal Fluid Lab (Frost Lab) at the Beijing Institute of Technology. His research focuses on heat and mass transfer mechanisms in extreme temperatures, significantly advancing the understanding of frost and defrost processes crucial for the safety of aircraft and vehicles in low-temperature environments. Additionally, Prof. Song’s work on efficient phase conversion heat mechanisms addresses high heat flux challenges in the energy and manufacturing sectors. His innovations in "extremely cold temperature control" and "extremely hot temperature control" have made him a globally recognised expert, contributing to advancements in anti-frost, anti-ice, and heat dissipation technologies.

Dr Cheung served in the Hong Kong government for over three decades. Before his retirement, he was appointed to senior positions in the Government, including Assistant Director of the Buildings Department, Deputy Director of Buildings, and Director of Buildings (also the Building Authority). Dr Cheung is currently the Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council. During his tenure as the Director of Buildings, Dr Cheung led the Buildings Department in providing services on private buildings through enforcement of the Buildings Ordinance to promote building safety; set and enforce safety, health and environmental standards for private buildings; and improve the quality of building development. Dr Cheung was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2019.

Ms Kwok is the Chairman and Executive Director of Allied Sustainability and Environmental Consultants Group Limited (ASECG). With over 20 years' experience in acoustics, environmental and sustainability consultancy, Ms Kwok specialises in environmental impact assessment and built environmental studies for sustainable building design. As a keen advocate of regenerative sustainability for the built environment, she has taken the initiative to serve on various boards and committees to advance the green building movement through advocacy at local, regional, and global levels. Ms Kwok has participated in the earliest batch of green building projects in Hong Kong and is also the first environmental practitioner in Hong Kong to be named a LEED Fellow.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement

 

Prof. Peng is a professor at the College of Civil Engineering of Hunan University. He served as a Vice Dean of the college from 2019 to 2021 and is currently the Treasurer of Hunan University. His research interests focus on the research and development of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) windows, distributed energy storage, building energy demand response and energy flexibility. His academic achievements in the theoretical analysis and modeling of semi-transparent photovoltaic (STPV) windows as well as the research and development of high-efficiency BIPV modules helped to reveal the coupling mechanism of photoelectric and thermal performance and establish a comprehensive energy efficiency simulation model for BIPV systems. Prof. Peng was also the first one to propose a simulation method for the energy performance of window shading products and to establish a standard system for energy efficiency evaluation and identification of such products.

Michele is a Business Development Manager at Hip Hing Construction Co. Ltd specialising in Modular Integrated Construction (MiC). She was in charge of a few recent MiC Projects, including the InnoCell and the temporary quarantine facilities at Pat Heung and Penny’s Bay Phase 3A for the Hong Kong government. InnoCell, which is the first high-rise MiC building in Hong Kong, received numerous awards and recognitions in various aspects such as safety, environment, Building Information Modelling (BIM), and innovative technologies application. Michele exhibited her excellent MiC project expertise and was awarded the MiC Champion 2022 by the Construction Industry Council. In 2022, she received the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service for her contributions to the construction industry, particularly in nurturing new talents.

Ir Ricky Lau, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of the HKSAR Government, has demonstrated exemplary leadership and made tremendous contributions to the local construction industry over the past three decades. In 2018, he took up the post of Director of Civil Engineering and Development cum Commissioner of Mines of the HKSAR Government overseeing various mega-sized projects of reclamation including the proposed Kau Yi Chau artificial islands under the Lantau Tomorrow Vision as well as other New Development Areas (NDA), and participating in infrastructural development. His advocacy for the “Construction 2.0” strategy, leveraging technologies through the Construction Innovation and Technology Fund (CITF) has taken the strategic development of the industry to a new horizon.

Outstanding Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement

 

Prof. Xugang Hua is Deputy Dean of College of Civil Engineering, Hunan University, and Director of Key Laboratory for Wind and Bridge Engineering of Hunan Province. Being a renowned scholar among researchers of his age, Prof. Hua is a recipient of many privileged awards, including National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) funded Distinguished Young Scholars (2020) and Excellent Young Scholars (2014). He developed a fictitious finite element-based method for flutter analysis of long-span bridges, which is widely used by both research and design institutes. In the field of structural heath monitoring, he formulated an improved perturbation-based method for stochastic finite element model updating, which is known to the world as Hua's Approach.

Prof. Huafu Pei is Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Infrastructure Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, and the Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Engineering Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of Liaoning Province. Focusing on geotechnical hazards prevention and mitigation, Prof. Pei committed himself to the research and development of original high-precision geotechnical disaster monitoring and sensing equipment for the benefit of society. The technologies and theoretical methods he developed have been employed for important engineering tasks including Xinpu landslide in Three Gorges reservoir area, Fushun West Open-pit, and Weijiagou landslide in Wenchuan earthquake zone.

Dr Aotian Song is the co-founder and CEO of Shenzhen Leadus Industry Co. Ltd (formerly Shenzhen Pavo Tech Development Co. Ltd). Aiming to resolve the core technology problems in ultra-low energy consumption building industry chain, the company has been awarded as national high-tech enterprise, as well as one of top 100 enterprises in Shenzhen Longhua District. Dr Song and his team invented the first tempered and no-pumping hole vacuum insulated glazing in 2018. The invention has increased production efficiency, minimized cost and applied massively in areas like construction, transportation and electrical appliances.
