The history of the Department of Computing (COMP) dates back to 1974 and it took lead in the development of computing education in the territory. With nearly 50 years of success, today, COMP plays a strong role in performing world-class research and nurturing professional talents to support society’s advancement. Its excellence is well-recognized internationally, evident by its high position in world university rankings. COMP secured the 34th position in Computer Science in the "Best Global Universities Rankings" by the U.S. News & World Report 2023 and 44th in Computer Science & Engineering in the “Global Ranking of Academic Subject (GRAS) 2022”; COMP also ranked 79th in Computer Science in the “Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023”; alongside other globally renowned institutions.
COMP is devoted to constructing a nurturing environment and creating excellent learning experiences for students, inspiring them to unleash their potential to become future’s innovators. It delivers quality research postgraduate programmes, taught master programmes and undergraduate programmes in computer science and multidisciplinary areas of IT, enterprise computing, fintech and AI, blockchain technology, AI and big data computing, and metaverse technology. Its programmes integrate theories, systems and applications, meeting the needs of students who wish to pursue their career in computing-related technology.
COMP has made significant contributions to research that makes impact, keeping up with the knowledge advancement and global development in computing and information technology and facilitating technology transfer. It engages in a full and extensive spectrum of six research areas, including Artificial Intelligence and Robotics; Cyber Security and Privacy; Data Science, Information Retrieval and Human Computer Interaction; Fundamentals and Software; Networking and Mobile Computing; and Vision, Language and Graphics. It demonstrates its research capabilities through impressive records of winning competitive research grants, high-quality publications in prestigious journals and conferences, and strong industrial collaborations.
COMP has established solid partnerships with local and overseas institutions and dominant industry players with joint labs and projects of high research and development values. It also advocates social commitment and responsibility as academic staff members provide service and consultancy to a great number of local and overseas professional communities, committees and organisations, and students contribute their IT professional knowledge in community service projects.
