Generative AI/ChatGPT Workshops for Secondary School Teachers

Outreach

The Department of English and Communication (ENGL) was recently invited by St Paul’s School (Lam Tin) to give a workshop on the interface between generative AI and education. On 12 July 2023, ENGL Head Prof. Eric Friginal, along with the Department’s Dr Max Diaz and Mr Rickey Lu, gave a workshop titled “Generative AI/ChatGPT as Tools for Teachers” on Zoom to about 30 teachers of the school. The workshop covered how generative AI brings new opportunities and challenges to teaching and learning and how teachers can incorporate these new tools in the classroom. Through hands-on demonstrations covering rubric and assessment creation, among others, the workshop provided hands-on opportunities for teachers to reflect on how their current teaching practices may need to be reconsidered in the face of these transformative technological advancements.

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to share our knowledge and skills on generative AI with frontline teachers so that they can utilise them in their teaching and guide their students in the proper ways of using this tool," said Prof. Friginal. The workshop highlighted the need for schoolteachers to learn and understand the use of generative AI and its pedagogical implications. ENGL hopes to offer more workshops in the near future to help teachers master the use of this technology.
