Dean's Message

Welcome to the fourth issue of the FS newsletter!

First and foremost, I take immense pride in honoring the recipients of two prestigious grants. Prof. Chen Sheng, Head of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition (FSN), has been awarded the Research Grants Council (RGC) Research Impact Fund, receiving a substantial amount of $4.2M. Dr Zhao Jiong from the Department of Applied Physics (AP) has secured the Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) with over $4.1M. These grants will provide vital support for their groundbreaking research and drive advancements in their respective fields.

Additionally, let us celebrate the remarkable achievements of Prof. Zhao Yanxiang from the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology (ABCT) and Dr Zhang Biao from AP. They have been honored with funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)/RGC Joint Research Scheme for 2023/24, recognizing their fruitful collaborative research efforts and dedication to fostering international partnerships.

Furthermore, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Zheng Zijian from ABCT and Prof. Li Buyang from the Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA) on their remarkable accomplishment of being awarded the President's Awards for Outstanding Achievement 2023 – Research and Scholarly Activities (Outstanding Young Researcher). This esteemed recognition is a testament to their exceptional contributions to their respective fields of research. Besides, I am thrilled to share the exciting news that the Kuok Group Endowed Professorship in Mathematical Science has been bestowed upon Prof. Yang Tong from AMA, in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements. Through their unwavering dedication and innovative work, they have left lasting impact on academia and society.

To promote collaboration and knowledge exchange between academia and industry, the Faculty is committed to advancing knowledge transfer initiatives and inspiring colleagues to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. I am delighted to introduce the PolyU Science Seminar Series on Knowledge Transfer. We eagerly anticipate the engaging and insightful discussions that this series will facilitate.

I extend my warmest congratulations to all the award winners and grant recipients. I am immensely proud of our esteemed faculty members and their invaluable contributions to research, education, and knowledge transfer. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence and create a significant impact in the world of science locally and internationally.

歡迎閱讀理學院第四期學院通訊！

首先，我非常榮幸能夠在此祝賀兩位學者的研究項目獲研究資助局（RGC）2023/24年度資助計劃撥款。他們分別是食品科學及營養學系系主任陳聲教授，他獲研資局研究影響基金資助，金額高達420萬港元；以及應用物理學系趙炯博士，他的研究項目獲協作研究金（CRF）超過410萬港元的支持。這些基金是對他們進行突破性研究的鼓勵，並推動兩位在各自的領域上繼續進步。

再者，讓我們一起祝賀應用生物及化學科技學系趙燕湘教授和應用物理學系張標博士，恭賀他們獲得2023/24 年度的國家自然科學基金委員會（NSFC）及香港研究資助局（RGC）聯合科研資助基金的資助，這項成就是對他們卓越的研究工作，以及致力促進國際夥伴關係的認可。

此外，我亦衷心祝賀應用生物及化學科技學系鄭子劍教授和應用數學系李步揚教授榮獲2023年「校長特設傑出成就獎」– 研究及學術活動（傑出年青研究員）。這項殊榮表揚他們在各自研究領域中的卓越表現和貢獻。另外，我希望在此與大家分享一項讓人興奮的消息：應用數學系數學科學講座教授楊彤教授獲委任郭氏集團數學科學教授席，以表彰他的傑出學術成就。他們在科研領域的傑出成就，對學術界和社會均影響深遠。

為促進學術界與業界之間的合作和知識交流，理學院一直致力推動知識轉移，鼓勵教職員投身創業。在此，我想向各位介紹理大科學知識轉移研討會系列，期待促進同儕間具啟發性的討論。

容我再次衷心祝賀所有獲頒獎項和資助的得獎者。我們的教職員在研究、教育和知識轉移方面作出的寶貴貢獻，讓我感到無比自豪。讓我們齊心協力、追求卓越，繼續在本地和國際科學界發揮重大影響。
