Shaping the Future of Education: PolyU's Journey towards Excellence in Higher Education

Launched in January 2023, the Institute for Higher Education Research and Development (IHERD) at PolyU symbolizes the university's commitment to being a leading force in higher education innovation and an influential player in educational reform both regionally and globally.

As a new addition to PolyU, IHERD already carries a distinguished heritage. A key component of IHERD is the Educational Development Centre (EDC), a revered institution within PolyU, renowned for its outstanding contribution to enhancing teaching and learning. The EDC has played a crucial role in the career development of many faculty members through its diverse range of courses, seminars, and workshops.

In a joint effort with EdUHK, IHERD has set up the Centre for Immersive Learning and Metaverse in Education (CILME) at PolyU. The mission of CILME is to lead the exploration into technologically supported education, with a special focus on how immersive technologies like virtual reality and the metaverse can significantly improve student learning experiences, including enhancements in cognitive processing, concentration, memory, brain functionality, and overall educational outcomes.

Additionally, the inauguration of the Educational Research Centre (ERC) at PolyU is a pivotal step in meeting the contemporary challenges faced in higher education. This step is characterized by in-depth research into innovative teaching methods and curriculum revision. We warmly invite you to participate in our important study on the Effects and Prospects of Generative AI in Higher Education, analyzing both its challenges and opportunities.

This integrated approach, combining the strengths and resources of EDC, CILME, and ERC under the IHERD framework, positions PolyU at the vanguard of educational innovation. Our resolute commitment to advancing higher education is evident, and we are excited about our role in driving substantial and transformative changes in educational practices. We welcome collaboration with educators, researchers, and leaders in the field as we together navigate and shape the future of higher education in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
