Schemes for Trial License and Express License
Trial License Scheme
Applicable IPs: IPs owned or co-owned by PolyU or Mainland Research Institutes (MRIs) of PolyU
Eligibility: Start-ups/SMEs that aim to engage in technology development or market validation for commercialising PolyU’s IP concerned
Exclusivity of license: Non-exclusive
License period: 1 year or 2 years
License fee: HK$5,000 (for one-year trial license) or HK$10,000 (for two-year trial license)
Royalty: No royalty will be charged during the trial license period
Interim review: The licensee is expected to make reasonable progress relating to commercialization during the trial license period. The progress made by the licensee under the trial license will be reviewed three months before the end of the trial license period with a view to formalising the formal licensing terms and arrangement with the University.
Renewal: Start-ups can only apply for a trial license on the same technology once, with no renewal of the trial license.
Express License Scheme
Applicable patents: Patents filed for 10 years or more, owned or co-owned by PolyU or Mainland Research Institutes (MRIs) of PolyU
Eligibility: Companies that aim to commercialise the PolyU’s IP concerned
Exclusivity of license: Non-exclusive
License period: 2 years
Upfront fee: Nil
Royalty: 3% of net sales or other forms of royalty depending on the nature of technology or business model
Interim review: The licensee is expected to make reasonable progress relating to commercialization during the license period. The progress made by the licensee will be reviewed three months before the end of the 2-year license period with a view to either renewing the license under the same terms or formalising other terms as deemed appropriate by the University based on the progress and intention of the licensee.
