Novel Magnetic Field System for in Ultra-precision Machining

Machining difficult-to-cut metallic materials poses many challenges, especially in ultra-precision machining (UPM) such as single point diamond turning (SPDT). To overcome these challenges, the research team has developed a novel machining system in which a magnetic field was added to SPDT. Under the influence of the magnetic field, the magnetic particles in difficult-to-cut materials will form into linear chains which serve as highly conductive paths for transferring heat, consequently minimizing the swelling effect after machining. Furthermore, the rotating metallic workpieces in the magnetic field are subjected to an eddy current damping effect, thereby counteracting the vibration force generated in the process. The reduction of vibration enhances the surface quality of the machined components and avoids tool damage.
