In this session, we will discuss tracking and management of Data, Research Development, Intellectual Property (IP), and associated expenses. Panelists will discuss:
• Methods for capturing, recording, and managing data, including Research Development, IP, and research-related data that pertains specifically to researchers and labs
• The importance of capturing accurate data and communications
• How to make data accessible to the appropriate staff within your organization
• Effective communication of relevant data within your organization
• Tracking internal and external marketing information

Policy, Agreement Primers, Agreement Compliance, External Communications

This session will discuss Intellectual Property (IP) Policies and agreements that may affect (or provide more information about) IP. We will discuss:
• Key components of IP Policies and other agreements related to inventions
• Effects of these policies and agreements on an institution’s IP
• Information such agreements might provide a technology transfer office
• How industry can use these policies and agreements to better capture and manage its IP
• Effective communication with outside entities (outside counsel, licensors, licensees, and co-owners)
• Management of IP-related costs such as patent expenses
• Agreement-related expenses such as royalty and milestone payments

Startups
Audience: Industry and Academic attendees

In this session, the panelists will discuss the special considerations when an academic institution licenses intellectual property to a startup company. While the focus will be on academic TTOs licensing to a startup founded by an academic researcher, technology startups without a university connection may also gain insight into some best-practice tips during the session.
• Managing relationships when a researcher is both an inventor of university IP and a founder of a startup

This session will dive further into topics discussed in previous course sessions with an emphasis on University Technology Transfer Office operations. As time permits, we will cover the following topics:
• Pre-Disclosure, Outreach, Evaluations – Tracking outreach and pre-disclosure activities; strategies for meeting communication deadlines
• Intellectual Property Docketing and Expenses – Simplifying legal invoice review process; requesting licensee pre-payments; dealing with delinquent accounts, default letters, termination letters, payment plans, write-off requests
• Agreements Primer & Compliance – Sponsored and Collaborative Research Agreements, InterInstitutional Agreements; communication with co-owners & inventors
