Frequently Asked Questions

Since people began to realise the importance of design for safety, there have been several studies undertaken in recent years. Different terms have been used for DfS:

  • Designing for Construction Safety and Health (DfCSH)
  • Construction Design Management (CDM)
  • Prevention through Design (PtD)
  • Safety in Design (SiD)
  • Construction Hazards Prevention through Design (CHPtD)
  • Life Cycle Safety
  • Safety by Design
  • Work Safe through Design

Prevention through design (PtD) is a comprehensive approach to addressing safety and health issues by “designing out” hazards and minimizing residual risks.
——PREVENTION THROUGH DESIGN (PTD) IN THE PROJECT DELIVERY PROCESS

Addressing occupational safety and health needs in the design process to prevent or minimize the work‐related hazards and risks associated with the construction, manufacture, use, maintenance, and disposal of facilities, materials, and equipment.
——NIOSH (United States)

Health and Safety by Design manages health and safety risks throughout the lifecycle of structures, plants, substances, or other products. Designers are in a solid position to make work healthy and safe from the start of the design process.
——Health and Safety by Design (New Zealand)

Safe design means integrating control measures early in the design process to eliminate or, if this is not reasonably practicable, minimise risks to health and safety throughout the life of the structure being designed.
——Safe Design of Structure (Australia)

Design for Safety (DfS) identifies potential hazards and reduces health and safety (H&S) risks through adequate design, as earlier in the conceptual and planning phases and throughout the project lifecycle.
——Construction Industry Council (Hong Kong)
