The Hong Kong Research Symposium at Consensus Hong Kong 2025 successfully convened leading experts, researchers, and industry pioneers on 20 February 2025 to discuss the latest advancements in blockchain, Web3, decentralised AI, and post-quantum cryptography.

Hosted by the Research Centre for Blockchain Technology (RCBT) and supported by the PolyU and Cybaverse Academy Joint Lab in Law and Web3 of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), this landmark event was the only university-led session at Consensus Hong Kong. The symposium provided an engaging platform for academic discourse and industry collaboration, reinforcing the critical role of research institutions in shaping the future of decentralised technologies.

The event began with insightful remarks from Professor Man Ho Allen Au, Professor and Associate Head (Research and Development), Department of Computing, and Director of PolyU and Cybaverse Academy Joint Lab on Law and Web3 of PolyU, highlighting PolyU’s commitment to academic excellence and its role in supporting Hong Kong’s development as a leading Web3 hub. Professor Daniel Xiapu Luo, Professor and Associate Dean (Research) of Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, and Director of The Research Centre for Blockchain Technology of PolyU, followed by introducing RCBT’s dedication to advancing innovative research, laying the groundwork for discussions on the evolving landscape of Web3.

The keynote sessions featured distinguished speakers who shared their expertise on emerging technologies. Professor Jintai Ding, Dean of School of Mathematics and Physics, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, delivered an insightful presentation on post-quantum cryptography migration, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in transitioning global digital security to quantum-resistant standards.

Professor Muriel Médard, NEC Professor of Software Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and CEO/co-founder of Optimum, introduced a new paradigm for Web3 that enhances blockchain infrastructure by improving data availability, scalability, and efficiency.

Professor Jiannong Cao, Dean of Graduate School, Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Professor in Data Science, and Chair Professor of Distributed and Mobile Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, explored how AI models can operate in decentralised environments, leveraging blockchain for trust, scalability, and autonomous coordination.

A thought-provoking panel discussion followed, featuring Dr. Yi Li, Associate Professor, Nanyang Technological University, Dr. Sisi Duan, Researcher, Tsinghua University, and Dr. Patrick McCorry, Researcher, Arbitrum Foundation, who explored critical aspects of blockchain security, consensus mechanisms, and scalability. The discussion covered the challenges of securing decentralised applications, the role of blockchain in financial infrastructure, and the advancements in Layer 2 solutions for scaling Web3. Moderated by Professor Man Ho Allen Au and Professor Daniel Xiapu Luo, the session provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of decentralised technologies and their broader implications for the future of Web3.
