He currently serves as the Director of Centre for Optical Fibre Technology (COFT) at Nanyang Technological University.  He received the B.E. degree from the Wuhan University of Technology in 2005 and the Ph.D. degree from the Technical University of Denmark in 2011. Then he joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral associate. In 2014, he joined the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore as a Nanyang Assistant Professor. In 2019, he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. His main research interests are fiber-based devices, multi-functional fibers, bio-fiber interfaces, and in-fiber energy generation and storage. He also serves as the chairman of the IEEE Photonics Society Singapore Chapter and the chair of Optica (formerly OSA) Singapore Section.

Thermally drawn advanced functional fibers for wearable electronics

Abstract

Thermally drawn multifunctional fibers have emerged as a new yet promising route to enable unprecedented development in information technology. By adopting the well-developed preform-to-fiber manufacturing technique, a broad range of functional materials can be seamlessly integrated into a single fiber at kilometer length to deliver sophisticated functions. Here, we present the recent development of thermally drawn advanced functional fibers, from the fundamentals to in-fiber device demonstration. Especially, the integration of semiconductor materials into fiber geometries provides a unique route to introduce new functionalities into the existing fiber technologies. Main fabrication approaches to produce these fibers are summarized. Also, prospects and applications of this new class of fibers are discussed.
