Biochar-enhanced Construction Materials for Sustainable Waste Management and Decarbonisation
Valorisation of biomass waste (e.g. yard waste) into innovative biochar-enhanced construction materials can foster circular economy by waste valorisation and landfill diversion, which helps to achieve the waste reduction targets set out in the Government’s Waste Blueprint for Hong Kong 2035. Biochar is widely recognised as a carbon-negative material and a key decarbonisation technology to be deployed for achieving carbon neutrality.
Innovative designs and science-informed manufacturing technologies are developed for the cutting-edge production of biochar-enhanced construction materials for sustainable waste management and long-term decarbonisation, which will be agenda-setting and impactful for scalable applications in the local and regional industry. The pioneer products will include biochar partition block and biochar porous paver.
The tailored biochar properties and optimised designs of biochar-enhanced construction materials will be supported by both scientific investigation and pilot-scale production and evaluation to prove their technical performance, environmental merits, and durability in field-relevant settings.
It is forecasted that the industrial-scale adoption of our PolyU developed technologies will significantly contribute to landfill diversion of woody waste and reduction of carbon emissions each year.
