HKCSS “Youth Internship in Caring Profession for a Brighter Future” Project

Sharing by Jeffrey Man
Year-4 student of BSc (Hons) in PT programme

As a future healthcare professional committed to providing rehabilitation services to Hong Kong society, I was sorry to hear that the manpower in the residential care homes for persons with disabilities and the elderly was under great strain in the 5th wave of the pandemic. I believed it was time for me to apply the professional knowledge from my physiotherapy training in the previous 4 years to these hostels. Therefore, I joined the HKCSS scheme to help those in need and to show my commitment to providing healthcare services to the elderly and persons with disabilities.

It is such a precious chance for me to join this scheme. I worked at one of the hostels under SAHK, mainly taking care of residents with moderate to severe mental disabilities. Through serving different residents in the hostel, I came across different psychiatric and neurological conditions. This not only let me have a better understanding of how to treat and take care of these kinds of clients, but also taught me how to work better and cooperate with other medical professionals, thus preparing me for a transdisciplinary or multidisciplinary work setting in the future.

I am really thankful that SAHK staff were very supportive. Through them I have gained some precious and unforgettable experiences during my service there. Other than taking care of the residents, I assisted the staff in holding some iPad groups, playing card games and ball games with the residents. I really had a good time with the residents and staff in the hostel. Thanks to HKCSS and RS for allowing us to participate in this scheme!
