Ultra-precision Machining Technology is a multi-disciplinary research area, which forms the backbone and support of today’s innovative technology industries from optoelectronics and mechatronics, optics, and telecommunications to biomedical engineering.
In 1996, the Ultra-precision Machining Centre (UMC) was the first of its kind in Hong Kong and mainland China to be engaged in the promotion and application of ultra-precision machining technology for the precision mold and optics industry. In 2009, the Partner State Key Laboratory in Ultraprecision Machining Technology was approved by the Ministry of Science (MOST) to be established at the PolyU as a partner laboratory of the State Key Laboratory of Precision Measurement Technology and Instruments in Tianjin University and Tsinghua University. Upon approval by MOST in 2018, the Partner State Key Laboratory in Ultraprecision Machining Technology was renamed the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) (SKL of UMT).
The research activities of the SKL of UMT focuses on five directions including Micro and Nano-machining Mechanics and Technologies, Advanced Ultra-precision Machining Technologies and Processes, Freeform Surface Metrology, Development of Equipment/Instruments for Ultra-precision Machining, and Advanced Optics Manufacturing Technology and its Applications.
We aim for the Laboratory to become a world-class scientific research and training base to nurture scientists and engineers in the research and innovative development of ultra-precision machining technology. We look forward to working with you and your institutions on any collaborative ideas that you may have in relation to ultra-precision machining technology and our services.
