【#WeArePolyU】What motivated you to develop your research in fire safety engineering in Hong Kong?
“The high-density living environment in this city makes fire risk potentially great, so I hope to make a meaningful contribution to the safety and resilience of structures here.” Ever since the collapse of the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001, Prof. Usmani has been focusing on developing new design methods for building structural systems with better fire resistance. Besides producing research in building service engineering, he has led the Department to educate future engineers who will help make the city a safer and sustainable environment to live in.
