Summary

Title: Communication and Interpersonal Dynamics in Virtual Team Meetings: An Applied Linguistic Perspective

Abstract

Technological advances and globalisation in businesses have encouraged employees in multinational companies to work across geographical, linguistic and cultural boundaries in the form of virtual work teams. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, this work form has become the norm for employees around the world and is expected to remain prevalent in the post-pandemic era. International virtual work teams often consist of members from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and they may not have any encounters outside the virtual world. These complications, coupled with the heavy reliance on technology, can hinder effective business communication among members in virtual work teams. This study investigated virtual team members’ experiences of and perceptions towards virtual team meetings (VTMs) and analysed authentic VTM interactions using Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) as a theoretical framework. The identification of linguistics/communicative devices associated with CAT accommodation strategies and contextual factors influencing the strategies employed expand our understanding of virtual team meetings and can be developed into training package to improve professional communication practices.

Dr Carol Yu

Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of English and Communication, PolyU

Carol Yu obtained her PhD degree from the Department of English and Communication at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2021 and is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department. Her research interests (broadly) include sociolinguistics and intercultural communication. Specifically, how the interplays between culture, intergroup relations, perceptions, attitudes and immediate context affect and are affected by communication practices. She is currently involved in a healthcare communication research project that investigates End-of-Life workers in Hong Kong and Australia with the aim to draw attention to the cultural, social, work and communication practices that contribute to marking death at broader societal levels.
