Summary
If your school teaches, or intends to teach, Science in the MOI of English then this programme is an opportunity for your Science and English teachers to collaborate in making sure your students learn Science well. A minimum of 2 and maximum of 5 teachers, with at least one English teacher, can participate. The Learning Circle will comprise up to 6 schools. The programme offers a well balanced mix of theory about the principles of Language Across the Curriculum along with practical examples of how teachers can use this to design engaging lessons which develop language skills and scientific knowledge and understanding.
The programme consists of 3 components:
- 3 - day professional development to be delivered at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University comprising lectures, workshops and demonstration lessons on teaching Science with MOI English in June 5th - 7th 2024
- 12 hours of school based support between September to December 2024
- Two sharing sessions (half day afternoon sessions) where all registered schools share their best practices in teaching Science in MOI English.
Key Outcomes
You will know how to use a genre-based approach to integrate English language skills into how your students learn in Science
You will know how to design problem-based learning activities in Science where students use extended writing to explain and describe their learning
You will have a good understanding of how you can collaborate with teachers of English/Science to improve your students English language skills
You will join a networked learning community to collaborate with Science and English teachers from other schools about best practices in integrating Science and LAC.
You will have a deeper understanding of how to increase student engagement through better use of classroom language and dialogic questioning.
