Title of thesis:
Understanding Cancer-related Stigma in Hong Kong: A Corpus-based Study of Social Media Discourse (provisional)
Description of thesis research:
My PhD project aims to explore the linguistic patterns used in social media platforms to stigmatize or destigmatize cancer patients and survivors. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach that incorporates computational and corpus linguistics methods, the project will evaluate the impact of these strategies on public discourse, examining how they contribute to othering, discrimination, solidarity, and empowerment. It will also investigate the sociocultural dynamics influencing cancer-related stigma in online discussions. Ultimately, the study seeks to provide recommendations for promoting low-stigma language and communication around cancer in Hong Kong.
