Gold Medal for CEE Scholars at International Exhibition of Inventions
At the 45th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva held from 29 March to 2 April 2017, research on upcycling wood waste into particleboards by CO2 curing and adding low-carbon cement was honoured with a gold medal. Led by Dr Daniel Tsang, Mr Lei Wang (PhD student), and Prof. Chi Sun Poon of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), the research developed an innovative and low-carbon technology using magnesia cement and carbon dioxide curing to upcycle wood waste into eco-friendly cement-bonded particleboards. With many advantages over conventional materials such as thermal and acoustic insulation, PolyU¡¦s eco-friendly particleboards are excellent for use as interior wall panels or outdoor noise barriers.
