Dean's Message

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Blessed with a tradition of engineering excellence for 85 years, the Faculty of Engineering with its constituent departments, namely Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Computing, Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering, have nurtured generations of engineers and technologists who have, over the years, played active and leading roles in the development and betterment of community locally, nationally and internationally. With a strong commitment in local engagement and emphasis in global outlook, our teaching and research activities aim to educate students who can flourish locally and internationally.

We offer an impressive portfolio of undergraduate programmes as well as taught and research postgraduate programmes. With valuable advice from our industrialists, professional engineers, entrepreneurs as well as local and international academics, we are able to continuously enhance our programme curricula, teaching methodologies and facilities so as to equip our students with confidence and updated knowledge, enabling them to apprehend and contribute to their professions efficiently and effectively.

The breadth of our research achievement stretches from earth to space and covers strategic areas with a high level of relevance to society. Some of our key achievements are:

• Fibre optics sensing networks for predictive-maintenances of railway systems
• High speed optical communication system
• Integrity monitoring of satellite navigation for civil aviation & accurate satellite positioning for highly urbanized areas
• Noise and vibration control to be used in the next generation of satellites
• Novel nanofiber technology for energy, environment and health application
• Radiation-free scoliosis assessment system using 3D ultrasound imaging
• Smart warehousing system for the fourth industrial evolution
• Ultra-precision machining and measurement technologies for biomedical, bionics, advanced optics and photonics applications
• Wearable robotic arm to assist stroke patients in mobile rehabilitation

You will find a lot of exciting projects and achievements in our laboratories and research centres. Furthermore, we have solid experience in industrial collaboration and technology transfer to our industrial partners.

Today, our vibrant faculty consists of over 5,700 local and non-local students, and a pool of over 160 academics and 330 research personnel. You are most welcome to visit us.
