Virtual Launch of a New Edited Volume on China-India Interactions
Research & Scholarly Activities
A webinar to launch Beyond Pan-Asianism: Connecting China and India, 1840-1960s, edited by Prof. Tansen Sen (NYU Shanghai) and Dr Brian Tsui (CC), was held on 3 December 2020. The virtual event was organised by three Indian-based institutions — the Institute of Chinese Studies, the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) and Jawaharlal Nehru University. More than 290 people registered for the launch, which was also livestreamed on Youtube.
Before the editors introduced the volume, Dr T. C. A. Raghavan, Director General of ICWA and a former senior diplomat with the Indian foreign service, gave the keynote address. An accomplished historian of South Asia in his own right, Dr Raghavan highlighted features of the volume that would appeal to a broader readership.
Dr Tsui explained how the volume began as a research grant supported by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange and grew out of multiple meetings and conferences in Canberra, Hong Kong, Taipei and Shanghai. CC was the host of one such conference in December 2016 (see FH Newsletter 2016 issue 2 for details). Prof. Sen then introduced the volume’s four sections and invited one contributor from each section to discuss the chapters. A brief Q&A section concluded the event.
Published by Oxford University Press, Beyond Pan-Asianism is expected to be on the market in February 2021. Video of the launch is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzVzSXyskZ8.
