Student Sharing: Recipients of Sin Wai Kin Chinese Humanities Exchange Scholarship

Student Corner

Six FH students were awarded the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Humanities Exchange Scholarship 2021/22 and went on an exchange earlier on:

CHENGKaYee568x320Cheng Ka Yee, BA(Hons) in Bilingual Interdisciplinary Chinese Studies (exchange to Simon Fraser University, Canada)

“Living alone in an unfamiliar city was definitely a big challenge. My first month in Vancouver was really difficult. Even though I had been living in a student dorm in Hong Kong for a while, it was still hard to be completely independent without any help from my family. Independence does not just mean leaving home or living alone, but also knowing how to solve problems by yourself and make appropriate arrangements. Going on an exchange has definitely provided me with such training.”

AlessandraCHOW2_568x320Alessandra Chow, BA(Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies
(exchange to the University of Southampton, UK)

“I am extremely grateful for the exchange trip and everything I have learned from it. I personally think that I have grown a lot and am more capable of solving problems and overcoming obstacles. I have also become much more independent since I had to do everything by myself. The people I met were all amazing and they had such a good influence on me as a person. I personally got to know so much about the different culture across the globe, and I intend on learning more about it.”

CHUAHuiYing_568x320Chua Hui Ying, BA(Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies
(exchange to the University of Warwick, UK)

“With this exchange opportunity, I get to expose myself to the Western culture as well as their teaching approach which is significantly distinctive from the Asian cultures. Since I was young, I have always loved to travel overseas and learn how people from different backgrounds think which in turn allow me to reflect on my own cultures with different insights. This has opened my eyes to new perspectives and possibilities in life or eventually provide a different way of perceiving the world.”

SzeMingLAU_568x320Lau Szeming, BA(Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies
(exchange to University of Waterloo, Canada)

“The four months in Canada as an exchange student is full of fond memories, memories that could put a smile on my face whenever I think about it. Once again, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Humanities Exchange Scholarship donor. As a matter of fact, their invaluable financial support has encouraged me to make the best out of every day in Canada. All the best to everyone planning to go for an exchange; I promise it will be a spectacular adventure!”

ZoeSHUM_5Zoe Shum, BA(Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies
(exchange to Yonsei University, Korea)

“The exchange experience not only provided hard knowledge but also soft skills like cultural intelligence. Through interacting with students from around the globe, I realised that every culture has its values and beliefs; therefore, it is important to relate to and embrace different cultures. Making new friends from around the world has made me see the bigger picture of the world. The exchange programme has changed my usual way of thinking and motivated me to think outside the box.”

SabrinaWONG_568x320Sabrina Wong, BA(Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies
(exchange to the University of Birmingham, UK)

“This exchange has granted me precious memories and enhanced personal development. During these few months, I learnt to believe in myself and never be afraid to ask for help. I never thought I could travel alone from Hong Kong to Birmingham with 40kg of luggage, live with someone I had never met, do all my chores, travel alone to other countries and more. However, I had overcome them, and these experiences definitely made me more confident and mature. Thank you once again for the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Humanities Exchange Scholarship that allows me to live to the fullest during this journey. This exchange will always be a fruitful and surreal episode in my life.
