DALS Student’s Paper on COVID-19 Communication Published on Lingua
Research & Scholarly Activities
A DALS Student, Ms Yao Le, has recently published an article with Dr Cindy Ngai(CBS) on Lingua. The paper is entitled “Engaging social media users with attitudinal messages during health crisis communication”, and Ms Yao has shared with us a summary of the paper:
During COVID-19, People’s Daily has been communicating coronavirus related information on Weibo regularly. In this study, we investigated these messages by focusing on attitude resources employed in the content based on the Attitude system, a linguistic framework developed by Martin and White. Furthermore, in order to identify the real-world effect that these resources might have, we examined the association between messages containing attitudes and the degree to which social media users interact with these messages in forms of ‘likes’, ‘shares’, and ‘comments’. We found that the use of attitudinal resources had a positive impact on encouraging public interaction, and that certain types of attitude (e.g. moral judgement) could be more effective in achieving that purpose.
