Teachers’ Lift: Spring 2022 Episodes

Research & Scholarly Activities

The Teachers’ Lift is a teacher-initiated and teacher-produced podcast designed to be a comfortable space to chat about teaching. This cross institutional initiative, run by colleagues from the language centres at PolyU, HKU and HKUST, is now in its third year with regular episodes throughout the teaching semester.

Spring 2022 saw some popular episodes featuring colleagues old and new. Former ELC Centre Director, Dr Bruce Morrison featured in an early episode this year with a recording that encompasses Nina Simone, Bowie, the Velvet Underground and the Rolling Stones, taking in Cairo and Beijing along the way. In a wide-ranging conversation Bruce looked back at his career and his thoughts on both students and teachers.

In a fascinating episode featuring a guest from HKU, Professor Stephen Matthews from the Department of Linguistics, clarified some of our common misunderstandings and responded to certain criticisms and confusions surrounding bilingualism. The episode covers code-switching, interference and translanguaging as the discussion looked at how English can be taught to bilingual learners. Listen to this episode here:

Finally, one more recent episode of interest featured Darren Harbutt from the PolyU’s EDC. In this illuminating discussion, Darren introduced us to the exciting new world of HyFlex, where in-class instruction meets on- and off-line learning, and left us asking the questions, will this become the new normal. Thanks are especially due to podcast hosts Dawn Gillis and Eric Tindall from the ELC for asking the questions during this season.
