Developing Students’ Critical Thinking in EAP Courses: Insights from a New Book Chapter
Research & Scholarly Activities
A new book chapter, "Embedding critical thinking instruction into English for academic purposes course," has recently been published in the book, Best practices in English teaching and learning in higher education: Lessons from Hong Kong for global practice, edited by Dr Lillian Wong from the Centre for Applied English Studies at the University of Hong Kong.
This chapter is the result of two significant projects conducted by Issa Ying, Jay Bidal, Adam Barker and Visanna Lee in English Language Centre: a Dean’s Reserve project from 2017 to 2019, "Developing Critical Thinking through Visible Thinking Routines in EAP course" and the project "Exploring student language needs for Embedded Critical Thinking Instruction in ELC Course," supported by the Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant for Language Enhancement Activities in the 2016-19 Triennium.
The book chapter examines the use of Visible Thinking routines (VTRs) developed by the Harvard Graduate School of Education to explore the benefits of applying VTRs and implementation factors in EAP courses. It provides insights into students’ language needs for expressing their critical thinking in writing, enhancing their critical thinking in EAP courses and helping them become effective communicators.
