Dr Wong Ka-hing conferred Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials

Congratulations to Dr Wong Ka-hing of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology for being conferred as Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) and receiving the IAAM Scientist Award for his contribution to applications of nanotechnology. IAAM is a renowned non-profit international scientific research organization aiming to promote advanced materials research. Fellow of IAAM is a notable distinction that recognizes researchers’ significant contributions and efforts in advance materials.

Prof. Raymond Wong has been bestowed successive endowed professorship - the Clarea Au Professor in Energy

The Clarea Au Endowed Professorship in Energy has been bestowed on Prof. Raymond Wong, Dean of the Faculty of Science, at the Fourth Inauguration of Endowed Professorships cum the First Inauguration of Endowed Young Scholars held on 31 August 2022. The Endowed Professorship Scheme was introduced in 2021 to recognise distinguished academics and their remarkable achievements. The Scheme provides funding and support to help the appointed professors strive for excellence in their respective disciplines. The successive Endowed Professorship will further strengthen Prof. Wong’s research in developing new molecular and nano materials for energy conversion (light/electrical and thermal/electrical). Prof. Raymond Wong is currently Chair Professor of Chemical Technology at the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology of PolyU. Prof. Wong finds great interest in the design and synthesis of new molecular functional materials and metallopolymers with photo-functional properties and energy functions, with his scope of work ranging from innovative research to application studies. Currently, his team is working on sustainable energy sources and improving energy conversion technologies to meet the world’s future energy demand and work towards a cleaner environment. Prof. Wong has published more than 800 research papers in leading international scientific journals and is among the world’s top 1% on the Institute for Scientific Information list of most-cited chemists and materials scientists. He was named one of the Highly Cited Researchers for seven consecutive years (2014–2020) by Thomson Reuters, now known as Clarivate. Prof. Wong was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2005 and was a Founding Member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences. Being the first Chinese scientist presented with the RSC Chemistry of the Transition Metals Award, he was decorated with countless international and national awards, including the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship, the Natural Science Award (First Class) of the Ministry of Education, the FACS Distinguished Young Chemist Award, the JPA Lectureship Award for Asian and Oceanian Photochemist, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation, the State Natural Science Award (Second Class), and the RGC (Research Grants Council) Senior Research Fellow Award, among others. Prof. Sun Defeng awarded the RGC Senior Research Fellow 2022/23

Prof. Sun Defeng, Chair Professor of Applied Optimization and Operations Research and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics, has been bestowed with the RGC Senior Research Fellow 2022/23 in recognition of his distinguished research achievements and significant contributions to the higher education sector. Prof. Sun will receive a fellowship grant of around HK$7.8 million for a period of 60 months. We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Prof. Sun for his dedicated efforts in pursuing research excellence.

PolyU-supported start-up winning an award in JUMPSTARTER

Grand Rise Technology Limited, a start-up supported by PolyU and co-founded by Professor Li Pei of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, won the Environmental Impact Award in the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund/HSBC JUMPSTARTER 2022 Global Pitch Competition.   Grand Rise Technology has recently developed the CareCoatex Pro Ultra bio-based anti-microbial coating, which is eco-friendly, bio-based and has long-lasting anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles 2022

The Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles aims to give public recognition to outstanding graduates of the Faculty for their professional achievements and significant contributions to the community and their alma mater. We are pleased to announce that Prof. Tsang Shik-chi, Edman and Mr Kwok Chi-hung, Stanley have been selected as the 2022 Outstanding Alumni in recognition of their remarkable achievements.      Prof. Tsang Shik-chi, Edman Outstanding Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles Prof. Tsang obtained the Higher Diploma in Chemical Technology in 1987. He is currently a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and the Head of Wolfson Catalysis Laboratory at the University of Oxford. With his world-leading expertise in materials chemistry and green catalysis, Prof. Tsang has won a number of international awards and has published more than 450 referred publications including Science, Nature and Nature sister journals with h-index of 75 and citations exceeding 24,500 times (Google Scholar). Also, as an alumnus of PolyU, Prof. Tsang has been proactive in working with PolyU scientists and students in related areas.   Mr Kwok Chi-hung, Stanley Outstanding Alumni Award in Entrepreneurial Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles Mr Kwok obtained the Master of Arts in Fashion and Textiles (Global Fashion Management) in 2013. Mr Kwok applied the patented heat-conductive knitting technology in a variety of wearable items and created a new lifestyle brand named KnitWarm with the vision of developing smart textiles for thermal protection and pain relief to improve wearers' quality of life. In the past 3 years, KnitWarm has launched and commercialized more than 10 innovative gadgets including Wrap, Smart KneeSleeve, HarnessWarmer, and WarmerBand. These functional wearables are well-recognized in the market and have received numerous international innovation awards.     Congratulations to Prof. Tsang and Mr Kwok for their significant contributions to FAST, the University and the community!

FAST researchers win two Silver Medals at 2022 Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days

Congratulations to Dr Shou Dahua of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing and Dr Chang Jinhui, Gail of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology on receiving two Silver Medals in this year’s International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva - Special Edition 2022 Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days – Virtual Event. The awarding-winning project of Dr Shou Dahua is “Omni-Cool-Dry™: Skin-like Fabric for Dynamic Thermal and Moisture Management”. Inspired by desert beetles, the new fabric reflects sunlight and emits body heat to cool the skin by 5 °C, it also dissipates sweat three times faster to keep wearers cool and dry. Another awarding-winning project of Dr Chang Jinhui, Gail is “AkkMore™: a Fungus and Plant Based Supplement Against Obesity or Prediabetes”. AkkMore™ is a nutritional supplements formula drink that aims to improve users’ body conditions by building a healthy microbiome. The drink boosts Akkermansia muciniphila in human guts, reduces metabolic disorders and loses weight. PolyU educators win three distinguished awards at the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Reimagine Education Awards 2021

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) educators received one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze award at Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Reimagine Education 2021, in recognition of their innovative teaching and learning methods. Co-organised by QS and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the Reimagine Education Awards are regarded as the “Oscars” of education, rewarding innovative approaches that enhance students’ learning outcomes and employability. The winning teams respectively led by Professor Daniel SHEK, Associate Vice President (Undergraduate Programme) of PolyU, and Dr Fridolin TING, Senior Teaching Fellow at the Department of Applied Mathematics of PolyU, were among 1,350 contestants from 84 countries and regions. The winning projects of PolyU were: Gold Award in Nurturing Wellbeing & Purpose category Project title: Leadership and Intrapersonal Development Programme Project leader: Professor Daniel Shek, Associate Vice President (Undergraduate Programme), PolyU Project summary: The programme builds up important positive attributes and competencies among university students, enabling them to pursue continual self-improvement, enhance their wellbeing, and contribute to society, through a suite of four subjects, namely Tomorrow’s Leaders, Service Leadership, Promotion of Children and Adolescent Development, and Service Leadership through Serving Children and Families with Special Needs, with both formal and informal learning processes. Silver Award in Science of Learning category  Project title: Innovative PALMS Drawing Pedagogies and Apps to Increase Active Learning in Mathematics and Science Project leader: Dr Fridolin Ting, Senior Teaching Fellow, Department of Applied Mathematics, PolyU Project summary: According to extensive evidenced-based research, active learning strategies significantly improve Science and Mathematics students' achievement, understanding and application of concepts. In addition, writing and drawing are integral parts of learning and teaching in the Sciences and Mathematics, to convey abstract concepts and ideas. This project aims to increase active learning in Science and Mathematics education through innovative pedagogies, mobile writing and drawing applications. Bronze Award in K12 category Project title: Developing Active Learning Pedagogies and Mobile Applications in High School Mathematics Education Project leader: Dr Fridolin Ting, Senior Teaching Fellow, Department of Applied Mathematics, PolyU Project summary: The project combines active learning pedagogies and novel writing and drawing apps that are optimal for active learning and conveying abstract concepts and ideas for Mathematics students. Thirty-five secondary school mathematics teachers and principals have been involved in the project. Professor WONG Kwok-yin, Vice President (Education) of PolyU, expressed his warm congratulations to the project teams. He said, “PolyU strives to foster innovative learning and teaching, aiming to provide quality education to students. The teams demonstrated great enthusiasm in developing pioneering teaching approaches that have brought real benefits to students from secondary to tertiary levels. The attainment of these prestigious awards is undoubtedly an exceptional recognition of our efforts in pursuing learning and teaching excellence.” Details in English / 中文
