Student sharing: From Project Runway to your own way – The process of ‘making it work’

Student name: Smran Gulati

I’m from: India

Programme: BSc (Hons) Scheme in Fashion and Textiles (Retail and Marketing)

Year of study: Year 4

Growing up, Simran was passionate about fashion. She would avidly watch ‘Project Runway’ and often fantasise about the fashion world. To pursue her passion, Simran applied to the Fashion and Textiles programme at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. ‘The scheme has let me explore every aspect of fashion: marketing, fashion design, knitwear design, intimates and sportswear, and technology’ Simran says. ‘I now realise that fashion is more than just design.’

Simran also recounts that being at PolyU has allowed her to meet several industry leaders, including professionals from leading fashion and retail brands such as Burberry, Farfetch, and Louis Vuitton. ‘They have been great mentors’ says Simran, who notes the tremendous support that these industry leaders gave her in addition to the encouragement she was already receiving from her academic professors.

Learning about how seasoned professionals journeyed through the fashion industry motivated Simran to undertake several internships during her undergraduate studies. One of these was at Lane Crawford, where she worked as an online content producer. This gave her the opportunity to produce marketing campaigns and to work with several teams from different departments, such as the marketing, creative, editorial, and online retail teams. ‘At Lane Crawford … I learned the importance of being adaptive and collaborative to help work [run] smoothly’, she says.

Simran’s experiences have helped her to plan her future career path. Her internships have helped her to realise that creating new content on social media and interacting with people genuinely motivates her. She now plans to become a fashion content creator. ‘I want to build a community where I can educate, inspire and entertain with my content and share my passion for fashion with everyone’.

When asked for advice that she wishes to give to future students, Simran says ‘just be true to yourself. Take your time to find your passion, and dare to feel and show your passion’.
