A new chapter for PolyU: Opening the Main Entrance

Over 600 distinguished guests, alumni, staff and students joined the Chief Executive Mr John Lee Ka-chiu and PolyU Council Chairman Dr Lam Tai-fai to celebrate the unveiling of the University Main Entrance on 24 August 2022. The unveiling ceremony was a signature event in the year-long celebrations held to mark the University’s 85th anniversary.

The high-profile opening was officiated by the Chief Executive and attended by dignitaries including Mr Eric Chan Kwok-ki, Chief Secretary for Administration; Dr Zhang Zhihua, Director General of the Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government; members of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council; Mr Carlson Tong, Chairman of the University Grants Committee; and chairmen and presidents of other local universities.

The design of the new entrance, which combines the proud heritage of the University with a touch of contemporary style, blends our signature red brick architectural style with classic colonnade features. On the side of the portal, a vertical green wall displays the PolyU logo on a reflecting pool. A hanging white slatted ceiling is located above the main staircase.

A full video recording of the ceremony is available here.

How would you describe Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is culturally diverse. The best part of studying in Hong Kong is that you can try different cuisines, from Eastern to Western, or even mixed. You will not be hungry for long because there are always Siu Yeh (late night) eateries, even at midnight.

What are your plans after completing your study programme?

I would like to work here and further explore Hong Kong. Although it may be difficult, it will be a great experience to look back on the years when I developed my abilities here at PolyU. A glimpse of success will motivate me to run fast!

Do you have any advice for future students?

There are always ups and downs when pursuing your life goals, but remember, just hang in there and take things one day at a time. Seize opportunities to enjoy your time at university. Surely you will receive your own unique reward in the end.
