PolyU and The University of Waterloo share their aspirations for CEVR collaboration
|
|
|
PolyU’s leadership welcomed The University of Waterloo (UW) delegation led by UW President and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vivek Goel as they met face-to-face at the Centre for Eye and Vision Research (CEVR) on 24 February, where the two parties toured the clinical facilities and shared their aspirations regarding research collaboration.
Both parties also joined CEVR’s networking reception, which was attended by distinguished guests including Ms Winnie Chan, Assistant Commissioner for Innovation and Technology (Research Clusters) of the HKSAR Government; Mr Albert Wong, CEO of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks; and Ms Marjorie Yang, Esquel Group Chairman and former Council Chairman of PolyU.
Launched in 2022, CEVR is the world’s first international hub for vision science.
“By leveraging the expertise of our exceptional researchers, we are proving that international collaboration is a pathway to improve the vision health of patients around the world,” said Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU. “We are proud of this truly special collaboration.”
CEVR aims to generate technologies for preventing vision loss in the ageing population and preserving vision health through five key areas of research excellence – myopia and eye growth, ocular drug discovery and delivery, vision enhancement, tear film and ocular surface, and advanced optometric technology.
“This collaboration connects two state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional researchers with a shared goal (of improving the vision health of patients around the world),” said Prof. Vivek Goel.

The “Consul General Talk Series” organised by PolyU’s Policy Research Centre for Innovation and Technology (PReCIT) successfully kicked off, with Mr Pham Binh Dam, Consul-General of Vietnam in Hong Kong, as the keynote speaker. He shed light on the opportunities and prospects for partnership between Vietnam and Hong Kong, including synergies pertaining to talent pool development. A PolyU student from Vietnam also shared her student life experience in Hong Kong.
Mr Pham talked about Vietnam’s prospects to become the 20th largest economy in the world, offering immense potential for cooperation with Hong Kong, especially in financial services, innovation and technology, and human resources. He suggested Hong Kong should tap into the sizeable pool of talents from Vietnam.
Prof. Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Director of PReCIT, said that young people are the future of the city and a key driver of Hong Kong’s continuing success. Nurturing local youth and seeking global talents are equally important, and PReCIT is committed to contributing to the Government’s policy deliberation in this regard.
Through the sharing of perspectives by diplomats in town, the “Consul General Talk Series” aims to serve as a platform for the PolyU community and the general public to gain insights about the latest I&T developments and policies, as well as about the opportunities and prospects in the Belt and Road countries.

Talent is one of the most important resources for growth. In support of PolyU’s strategic development to advance knowledge and address societal challenges with high-impact research and innovation, PolyU is launching its first-ever Professional Talent Development Programme to nurture young leaders in various professional disciplines to make an impact on the strategic operations of the University.
The two-year structured development programme provides the management trainees with the opportunity to develop themselves in specialised professional disciplines, such as digital transformation, student recruitment and development, research and knowledge transfer, accounting and finance, human resources, and facilities management.
The trainees will experience job rotation across central offices and academic units and receive Senior Management coaching. Appointees will also be guided to partake in University-level innovation and transformation projects which help fulfil the University’s mission in education, research and knowledge transfer.
Excellent performers will be offered fast-track promotion opportunities, and full subsidies for master’s degree studies. Ideas of innovation may also be translated into knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship initiatives with support from the University.
Fresh graduates and high-achievers with a bachelor’s or higher degree, or those with one to two years of working experience are welcome to apply.

Student name: Zhi Pei Low
Country/Region: Malaysia
Programme: BEng (Hons) in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development
1. What has been the best part of being an international student at PolyU?
As an international student, I was treated like a local and welcomed into the local community, and at the same time, I was able to connect with students from different cultural backgrounds. PolyU, and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in particular, provides many scholarships, programmes and opportunities that enable students to build their experience outside the classroom. In my case, these included the INSPIRE mentorship programme, Undergraduate Research and Innovation Scheme (URIS), events and competitions that enabled me to hone my soft skills.
2. How would you describe Hong Kong? And what is the best part of studying in Hong Kong/Asia?
Hong Kong is a vibrant city that provides a positive and motivating environment for students to explore their potential before entering the workforce. Its multiracial culture means students can enhance their intercultural skills in an open-minded and progressive context. The best part of studying in Hong Kong is the advantageous location in Asia. Travelling around is easy, and you can experience local nature while living in a big city.
3. What advice would you give students in next year’s class?
My advice would be: Don’t wait for your dreams to come true. Work hard and prepare yourself well, and opportunities will present themselves. At the same time, it is alright to experience failure along the way. Embrace your imperfections and walk through your life journey together with your beloved.
