Professor Yang Tong

Professor Tong Yang is a distinguished researcher and Chair Professor of Mathematical Science in the Department of Applied Mathematics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Previously, he held the Chair Professor of Mathematics at the City University of Hong Kong, where he also served as an Associate Dean of College of Science and Engineering (2007–2011) and Head of the Department of Mathematics (2012–2018).

Professor Yang’s research focuses on partial differential equations and kinetic theory. His notable contributions include the development of the Liu-Yang functional for L1 stability of BV solutions to hyperbolic conservation laws. He has also made significant advancements in fluid dynamic phenomena, boundary layer theories and high Reynolds number limit.

Recognised for his exceptional achievements, Professor Yang was elected as a foreign member (Academician) of European Academy of Sciences (2018), The World Academy of Sciences (2021), and The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences (2021). He was also a foreign member of Academia Europaea (2022) and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (2021).

Professor Yang received numerous awards and honours which include the inaugural RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme (2020), the Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award (Science and Technology, First Prize) from the Ministry of Education Higher Education of China (2019, 2022), the State Natural Science Award of China (2nd class) (2012), the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship (2011), the Changjiang Chair Professorship from the Ministry of Education of China (2005), the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2004), and the Morningside Silver Medal of Mathematics in the first International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (1998).

Actively engaged in the mathematical community, Professor Yang serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of London Mathematical Society: Bulletin, Journal, and the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis. He was President of the Hong Kong Mathematical Society (2016–2020) and Editor-in-Chief of Analysis and Applications (2013–2017), and is a founding Editor-in-Chief of Kinetic and Related Models launched in 2008.
