H H Hung Charitable Foundation was founded in 2018 by Mr Peter Hung Hak-hip, Honorary Chairman of Hop Hing Group, an industry-leading enterprise primarily engaged in food processing, distribution and retail. Mr Hung embraces the mission of giving back to society, generously contributing to worthy causes in education and youth development.

H H Hung Charitable Foundation spares no effort in supporting research on pain management. In the past few years, the Foundation has taken initiatives to partner with various universities in Hong Kong, by establishing endowed professorships in pain research and funding a pain research institute focussing on the prevention and treatment of pain. With this Endowed Professorship in Pain Management, the Foundation wishes to support talented researchers who contribute to the advancements in pain medicine, while looking forward to the emergence of innovative, effective and affordable treatments that alleviate pain among patients and greatly improve their quality of life.

By supporting the study of chronic pain illnesses and improving pain management, the Foundation aims to encourage patients to seek medical help as soon as possible for timely treatment. It also aims to arouse awareness and deepen the understanding of chronic pain illnesses across all walks of life, strengthen the support and healthcare for chronic pain patients, and inspire further researches and developments in the subject.

Professor Amy Fu

 

Professor Amy Fu, Associate Head of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Director of PolyU Rehabilitation Clinic, earned her professional degree and doctorate degree in Physiotherapy from PolyU. Since joining PolyU in 1994, she has assumed her roles in teaching, research and consultation, while serving as the coordinator of PolyU’s post-graduate programme in sports physiotherapy.

Professor Fu’s has devoted to pain study for many years, serving people from elite athletes to frail seniors. Her research covers mechanisms and management, and she focuses on academic research as well as clinical practice. She implements state-of-the-art approach to study muscles, tendon and joints, and explores how exercise and physiotherapy can enhance healing and relieving pain. Recently, she has also engaged in the design of a mobile app that leverages artificial intelligence to analyse the elderly’s walking postures and screen early joint degeneration, so as to provide timely pain-relief and rehabilitation.

Apart from research, Professor Fu also provides hands-on treatments to patients. She has been repeatedly invited by the National Sports Bureau of the Mainland China to oversee rehabilitation therapy plans for national athletes. The national judo and boxing teams made a record in the gold medals won in Beijing Olympics 2008, this could also be attributed to her great efforts and contributions. Professor Fu also conducted consultancy projects for the Guangdong Sports Bureau to identify factors causing knee, shoulder and back pain among elite athletes.

Professor Fu has won numerous accolades, including Certificate of Merit at the 13th World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, and Certificate of Commendation from Secretary for Home Affairs for her outstanding contributions to the development of sports and recreational activities in Hong Kong.
