Reinforcing a shared commitment between PolyU and alumni

The Alumni Atrium represents two driving forces: culture of support and commitment to nurturing and giving at PolyU

We regard the University’s alumni as part of our family, and acknowledging their legacy and commitment is hugely important to us. Alumni are our connection to the wider world, and they in turn can feel proud to belong to the PolyU family.

With that deep connection in mind, PolyU took the very bold step of revitalising part of the campus and creating the Alumni Atrium as a gift, offering our alumni a place to meet, relax and socialise. Opened on 25th November 2016, the Alumni Atrium is especially designed to encourage interaction in a warm and pleasant environment, the 250 square metre multipurpose venue features a multi-function hall, common area, gallery and meeting rooms, among other facilities.

DSC_1237Highlighting the four stages of PolyU’s development and further promoting our close ties with alumni, the Wall of Pride @ Alumni Atrium is an extension of the Wall of Pride on the campus’s main podium level. Externally, the lawn in front of the Atrium features “Congregation”, a set of eight stainless-steel bird-shaped sculptures symbolising the sense of togetherness for a purpose fostered within.

Situated near the main campus entrance at the very heart of university life, the Atrium not only provides an invaluable and easy to reach hub for PolyU’s alumni to gather, but also draws in staff and students in support of each other. The venue has already hosted more than 250 activities for over 10,000 participants since its opening, receiving tremendous support from the university community.

A key feature of the Atrium is the series of nameplates placed on prominent display, acknowledging alumni who have made donations for the purpose. These tastefully designed plates are testament to our alumni’s generosity and their willingness to advance the University’s general development. Also available are opportunities to make larger donations that are recognised by naming facilities. The common area and gallery have already been named, and a plaque recognising another very generous and thoughtful donor has been placed on the Atrium’s façade.

I am very grateful to PolyU for equipping me well with professional knowledge in engineering when I was young which paved the way for my career development. I fully resonate with PolyU's education philosophy and I am very willing to support projects that promote student development.

PolyU cares a lot about alumni and highly values their input and opinions. The Alumni Atrium helps enhance friendship, collaboration and exchange among alumni and other university stakeholders. I encourage all alumni to make good use of this venue to organise more meaningful events and activities.

I graduated from the Hong Kong Technical College, predecessor of PolyU. The professional knowledge I gained there helped me determine my career direction. Later I went to Canada to pursue my career. The development of my alma mater has always been my concern and I have been working hard to foster connection between overseas graduates and my alma mater. It is a great honour and a precious and meaningful gift for me indeed to have the Gallery at the Alumni Atrium named after myself.

I built the first “Wall of Pride” on the PolyU campus at the 50th anniversary of my graduation from the Hong Kong Technical College. I hope its replica at the Alumni Atrium would allow our alumni, especially the younger generation, to learn about the history and development of PolyU, and more importantly, to cultivate the spirit of contributing back to their alma mater.
