The "PolyU CMA 80th Anniversary – Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Invitational Golf Tournament 2014" jointly organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong (CMA) on 16 January has raised over $1.5 million for student development. Held at Mission Hills Golf Club in Dongguan, the event attracted more than 60 golf teams with representatives of the industry and commerce associations, prominent business and community leaders from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as alumni and friends of PolyU.
PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong thanked all the parties involved in making the event a success, particularly the CMA for its generous support for PolyU. Professor Tong said, "Our annual golf tournament, now in its 11th anniversary, this year is also an event to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the CMA. The fund raised will be used to support the development of our "Service-Learning" subjects and projects, which aim to provide students with opportunities to serve the community with their professional knowledge and skills, and to instill in them a greater sense of social responsibility ."
This year, the "Honorary Chairman Cup", the "CMA 80th Anniversary-Industrial & Commerce Cup" and "CMA 80th Anniversary-Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong & Macau Cup" awards went to Polaris Jewellery Manufacturer Limited, Golf 18 Club, and All-China General Chamber of Industry and Commerce teams respectively. Winners of the "Best Gross Championship of Men's Individual" were Mr S. M. Wang (Leadbetter course) and Mr T. L. Chan (Rose-Poulter course).
The University is appreciative of the support rendered by the Organizing Committee. Chaired by Dr Dennis Ng, Vice President of CMA and Managing Director of Polaris Jewellery Manufacturing Limited, the Committee comprised two Vice Chairmen: Mr Tenniel Chu, Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group; and five Honorary Chairmen: Dr Edward Chan, Managing Director of German Pool (Hong Kong) Limited; Dr Yip Kit-chuen, Chairman of Shanghai GMP Electrical Appliances Company Limited; Mr Lee Yuen-fat, Chairman of Ka Shui International Holdings Limited; Mr Peter Lau, Managing Director of Joyas Manufacturing Limited; and Mr Bob Chong, Managing Director of Chungnam Corporation Limited.
CMA has recently made a generous donation of HK$30 million to PolyU to support student development. In grateful recognition of CMA's staunch support, the University has named the golf tournament this year and also the teaching block CD on its campus after CMA. The official naming ceremony of the CMA Building is scheduled for 25 February 2014.
