PolyU names lecture theatre after Dr Patrick Lee Wan Keung

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a lecture theatre after entrepreneur Dr Patrick Lee Wan Keung, as a tribute to his distinguished contribution towards education and the development of the University. At a special ceremony held on 14 April 2014 on the University campus, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, expressed sincere appreciation to Dr Patrick Lee, Mr Raymond Lee, elder son of Dr Lee and Chairman of Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Limited, as well as the Lee family for their generous donation to PolyU and commitment to philanthropy.

PolyU names lecture theatre after Mr Lam Chik Ho

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a lecture theatre after the late Mr Lam Chik Ho (1908 – 1986), as a tribute to his dedication to the promotion of infrastructure, education and medical development in Hong Kong. At a special ceremony recently held on 20 March 2014 on the University campus, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, expressed sincere appreciation to Dr Samuel Lam, son of Mr Lam, and the Lam family for their generous donation to PolyU and commitment to philanthropy.

PolyU holds CMA Building Naming Ceremony

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a building on its campus after The Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong (CMA) in grateful recognition of CMA's ardent support to the University and significant contributions to the development of education. Following the donations of HK$1 million in early years that made possible the construction of a new campus in Hung Hom for the Hong Kong Technical College (predecessor of PolyU), CMA this year pledged another donation of HK$30 million to the University to support programmes that facilitate the all-round development of student. Officiating at the plaque unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony today (25 February 2014) were the Honourable Eddie Ng Hak-kim, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government; Mr Irons Sze, the 39th President of CMA; Dr Patrick Poon, Treasurer of PolyU cum Chairman of the Fund-raising Committee of PolyU Council; Professor Roy Chung Chi-ping, Chairman of PolyU Court; Professor Timothy W. Tong, President of PolyU; Mr Herbert Liang and Dr Jose Yu Sunsay, Permanent Honorary Presidents of CMA; and Dr the Honourable Lam Tai-fai, Legislative Council Representative of CMA. Dr Yu and Dr Lam are also members of PolyU Court. Mr Irons Sze remarked that nurturing professional talents is always a priority of CMA. The donation to PolyU in commemoration of its 80 anniversary reaffirms CMA's long-term commitment to education. Professor Tong expressed sincere gratitude to CMA for its long-standing support for PolyU. He said, "The generous donation of CMA in fact is a long-term investment in education. This will be a wise investment with very positive return as PolyU will work hard to ensure its students are capable of contributing significantly to Hong Kong and our motherland." The donation will be used to fund students participating in "Service-Learning", Student Exchange Programme and "Global Student Challenge". These initiatives will help students develop a greater sense of social responsibility through serving the needy with their professional knowledge, broaden their perspective, develop their innovation and entrepreneurial capability. The 8-storey CMA Building, with a total floor area of about 5,500 square metres, houses classrooms, laboratories and a number of faculties' and departments' offices. Founded in 1934, CMA is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. With over 3,000 member companies, CMA is one of the most representative industrial associations in Hong Kong. CMA has spared no efforts in promoting Hong Kong's industrial and trade development through organizing diversified wide range of activities. It organized the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo since 1938, established the CMA Testing and Certification Laboratories and Hong Kong Brand Development Council in 1979 and 2005 respectively. CMA is also well known for its continued and extensive community services, especially in education. It established the CMA & Donors Scholarship in 1964 and two secondary schools in 1976 and 1985.

PolyU CMA 80th Anniversary – Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Invitational Golf Tournament 2014 comes to a fruitful close

The "PolyU CMA 80th Anniversary – Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Invitational Golf Tournament 2014" jointly organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong (CMA) on 16 January has raised over $1.5 million for student development. Held at Mission Hills Golf Club in Dongguan, the event attracted more than 60 golf teams with representatives of the industry and commerce associations, prominent business and community leaders from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as alumni and friends of PolyU. PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong thanked all the parties involved in making the event a success, particularly the CMA for its generous support for PolyU. Professor Tong said, "Our annual golf tournament, now in its 11th anniversary, this year is also an event to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the CMA. The fund raised will be used to support the development of our "Service-Learning" subjects and projects, which aim to provide students with opportunities to serve the community with their professional knowledge and skills, and to instill in them a greater sense of social responsibility ." This year, the "Honorary Chairman Cup", the "CMA 80th Anniversary-Industrial & Commerce Cup" and "CMA 80th Anniversary-Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong & Macau Cup" awards went to Polaris Jewellery Manufacturer Limited, Golf 18 Club, and All-China General Chamber of Industry and Commerce teams respectively. Winners of the "Best Gross Championship of Men's Individual" were Mr S. M. Wang (Leadbetter course) and Mr T. L. Chan (Rose-Poulter course). The University is appreciative of the support rendered by the Organizing Committee. Chaired by Dr Dennis Ng, Vice President of CMA and Managing Director of Polaris Jewellery Manufacturing Limited, the Committee comprised two Vice Chairmen: Mr Tenniel Chu, Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group; and five Honorary Chairmen: Dr Edward Chan, Managing Director of German Pool (Hong Kong) Limited; Dr Yip Kit-chuen, Chairman of Shanghai GMP Electrical Appliances Company Limited; Mr Lee Yuen-fat, Chairman of Ka Shui International Holdings Limited; Mr Peter Lau, Managing Director of Joyas Manufacturing Limited; and Mr Bob Chong, Managing Director of Chungnam Corporation Limited. CMA has recently made a generous donation of HK$30 million to PolyU to support student development. In grateful recognition of CMA's staunch support, the University has named the golf tournament this year and also the teaching block CD on its campus after CMA. The official naming ceremony of the CMA Building is scheduled for 25 February 2014.

Laboratory named after devoted alumnus, Dr Ng Wing-hong

PolyU has named the laboratory for sustainable city located at Block Z, Phase 8 of its campus after a devoted alumnus Dr Ng Wing-hong. The naming ceremony, held on 3 December, was officiated by President Prof. Timothy W. Tong and Associate Dean of Faculty of Construction and Environment Prof. Geoffrey Shen, and was well attended by more than 80 participants. Dr Ng Wing-hong is one of the first alumni of the then Government Trade School, the earliest predecessor of PolyU, and he still maintains a strong tie with PolyU. As a tribute to his commitment to the University, PolyU conferred on him the title of University Fellowship in 2005, named a teaching block on campus after him in 2008, and presented him with the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award in 2009. Also, he earned the First Outstanding BRE Alumni Award in 2010 and was conferred by the University the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering in 2011. The Laboratory for Sustainable City is established to provide information infrastructure for examining the sustainable development of Hong Kong at the building and city level.

PolyU to advance textiles technology through the ninth endowed professorship

Following the inauguration of the first batch of eight endowed professorships in May 2013, PolyU announced recently the set up of the ninth professorship - the “Vincent and Lily Woo Endowed Professorship in Textiles Technology” and the Endowed Professor-designate is Professor Tao Xiao-ming, Chair Professor of Textile Technology of the PolyU Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC). Endowed by the “Vincent and Lily Woo Trust (2007),” the new endowed professorship, which is the second professorship set up by PolyU at ITC, has given ITC a strong impetus to make further contributions to the development of the local fashion and textiles industry and education. PolyU holds Henry Cheng Research Laboratory for Drug Development naming ceremony

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has named a research laboratory on its campus after Dr Henry Cheng, Honorary Chairman of Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, to pay tribute for his significant contributions to education and community services, as well as his ardent support to the University’s drug research and development. At the naming ceremony held today (4 November), Dr Henry Cheng and Mr Peter Cheng, Chairman of Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, officiated at the plaque unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony in company with Ms Marjorie Yang Mun-tak, Council Chairman of PolyU; Mr Chan Tze-ching, Deputy Council Chairman of PolyU; Dr Patrick Poon, Treasurer of PolyU cum Chairman of the Fund-raising Committee of PolyU Council, and Professor Timothy W. Tong, President of PolyU. Management of Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation and New B Innovation also attended the ceremony to witness this memorable moment. Addressing the ceremony, Ms Marjorie Yang appreciated Dr Cheng and the Foundation for their generous donation of HK$10 million to PolyU for drug development. Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Tong said, "PolyU Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology (ABCT) has an excellent research team of chemistry and biology experts which is a perfect combination for drug development. This cross-disciplinary research collaboration has attained technological breakthrough in various research areas. The generous donation of Dr Cheng and Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation carries a very special meaning as it is recognition of the tremendous effort of our research team. It also provides additional resources for the University to develop a sophisticated platform for drug development, bringing positive impact to the world." Dr Henry Cheng has played a prominent role in nurturing young talents. Through the Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, he has made substantial financial contribution to universities in support of campus, research and student development. Dr Cheng also demonstrates a profound concern towards children and young people who come from an underprivileged background by paying visits to these families and providing funding support to local social welfare agencies in their management of various community centres, where these youngsters can receive support for learning and personal growth. Located on the seventh floor of the Lee Shau Kee Building on the PolyU campus, the "Henry Cheng Research Laboratory for Drug Development" has a total floor area of 537 square metres with state-of-the-art equipment. The Laboratory will provide the platform for an excellent research team of chemistry and biology experts to work together towards the common goal of developing new drugs for the benefit of mankind.
