Mangifera indica, also known as Mango, is an evergreen tropical fruit tree and shade tree. It is originated from India and Malaysia and is now widely planted in tropical areas.
The scientific name (Mangifera indica) indicates its origin – India. The ripened fruits are edible and tasty. However, the Mango trees in Hong Kong do not receive special care and fertilizing, so their fruits do not normally ripen. The wood is not durable and easily attached by wood-boring insects. Latex exuded from the broken branches will cause skin irritation when touched.
You can find Mango trees near BC Wing, Lee Shau Kee Building, and the jogging track on PolyU campus. To learn more about the trees at PolyU, please visit TreeMap@PolyU.
