Roles and Responsibilities of Director of Research Postgraduate Studies (DoRPgS)
 

Each academic Department/School has a DoRPgS who is a member of its Departmental/School Research Committee (D/SRC). Concurrently, the DoRPgS is also a member of the Graduate School (GS) RPg Programme Committee (RPgPC). Working closely with the GS, the DoRPgS will act as a liaison between RPg students, Faculty Research Committees/School Boards (FRCs/SBs), Departmental/School Research Committees (D/SRCs), and GS. The DoRPgS is responsible for the day-to-day as well as overall management of the RPg programmes of the Department/School concerned within the defined policies, procedures and regulations, and ensuring effective communication on issues related to RPg programmes.

In particular, the DoRPgS’ responsibilities are:

  1. to ensure the effective conduct and organisation of the RPg programmes, in accordance with the University’s policies and regulations, including
    • student admission and interview, progress monitoring, supervision, subject offerings, assessment, various student applications, scholarship allocation, academic support, student training, counselling, internship, etc.;
  2. to be conversant with the University’s policies, regulations and procedures relating to RPg programmes;
  3. to act as the key contact between the RPg students, D/SRCs, FRCs/SB and GS;
  4. to serve as a source of information for both RPg students and supervisors about the University’s policies and procedures relating to RPg programmes;
  5. to keep in close touch with the progress of RPg students and to be aware of students’ views on the programmes;
  6. to communicate regularly with D/SRC and staff of the Department/School to keep them informed of GS and RPgPC issues, and issues relating to the RPg programmes;
  7. to review departmental guidelines and policy for RPg studies, subject assessment and examination arrangement, and submit recommendations to D/SRC;
  8. to work with RPg supervisors to ensure that the University’s policies and guidelines and quality standards pertaining to academic quality are observed;
  9. to report to the Head of Department/Dean of School concerned on the on-going requirements of staff and resources for RPg programmes, as part of the preparation of departmental estimates;
  10. to lead the development of the RPg programmes and the implementation of the Programme Learning Outcomes Assessment Plan, and conduct periodic review of the rationale, aims and intended learning outcomes (ILOs) of the RPg programmes;
  11. to coordinate the inputs to and the debate of D/SRC leading to the RPg programme proposals, documents and validation reports as well as programme review reports; and
  12. to serve on RPgPC, the University Selection Panel (by invitation), and Selection Committees (by invitation) for various centrally funded scholarships, joint PhD supervision schemes, attachment programmes, etc.
