Ice Wine and Dessert Wine Tasting

Winter is a magical season for ice wine and dessert wine!

Icewine harvest takes place when the temperature reaches between -10 and -13 degrees Celsius. This provides the optimum sugar level and flavour in the grapes. The grapes are carefully picked by hand and often an entire vine only makes a single bottle. This results in relatively small amounts of ice wine being made world-wide, making ice wine generally expensive.

Its production is obviously limited to that minority of the world's wine-growing regions where the necessary cold temperatures can be expected to be reached with some regularity. Canada and Germany are the world's largest producers of ice wines.

While dessert wines, by definition, appear pretty simple: they are wines often served with a dessert. They contain a rainbow of flavors including peach, herb, oak, and berry. When consumed with after dinner dish - or added to a cream - their tang and potency creates a wonderful combination.

We are pleased to taste the following award-winning ice wines and dessert wines with courtesy to Decanter:

- 2010 Wöllsteiner Äffchen Riesling Eiswein, Germany

- 2009 Grains De Malice Maître De Chais, Switzerland
