Member Activities Alan A. Lew Alan is involved in several tourism conferences in Asia for 2013. In chronological order, these include:
Allan Williams Allan was a keynote speaker at the BESTEN conference on sustainability and mobility in Provence in June, and at the Royal Geographical Society Geography of Leisure and Tourism Study Group’ postgraduate forum at Surrey in September 2012. He has published papers on: self-organizing innovation networks and the Hotel du Vin chain in the Journal of Economic Geography v12 (5), with Academician, Gareth Shaw; on international migration and innovation in small London hotels in Mobilities 7(3); and human mobility in functional urban regions in the International Review of Sociology 22 (2).
Brian King Brian has joined the School of Hotel & Tourism Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as Professor where he is Director of postgraduate programs including the well established Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management which has now been approved for delivery in China. Recent publications include;
Chris Ryan Chris now edits in addition to Tourism Management a second journal entitled Tourism Management Perspectives (also published by Elsevier and cited by Scopus and ScienceDirect). Earlier this year he co-edited a book with Ken Hyde and Arch Woodside, namely Field Guide to Case Study Research in Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure. Bingley (UK): Emerald Publishing. He won an award as an outstanding research scholar from the The University of Waikato Management School, while one of his doctoral students, Sun Minghui, went on to win a best student research award from the same university. With another of his doctoral students, Yang Jingjing, he secured a publication in Annals of Tourism Research (Jingjing now lectures as Surrey University) and he also helped another of his doctoral students, Cora Wong to gain publications in Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing and Annals of Tourism Research.
Richard Butler Richard and co-editor Wantanee Suntikul (Macau IFT) have just had published Tourism and War by Routledge. This book builds on their earlier publication Tourism and Political Change (2010) and explores the varying relationships between tourism and war over the past two thousand years in a variety of geographical and political situations.

Erik Cohen Erik was awarded the UNWTO Ulysses Prize for 2012.
Geoffrey Crouch Geoffrey and J. R. Brent have compiled a new two-volume set titled Competitiveness and Tourism published by Edward Elgar Publishing. These volumes bring together the key scholarly articles which discuss the challenges of managing, maintaining and enhancing competitive tourism destinations. This authoritative collection of articles covers service sector competition; conceptual models of tourism competitiveness; the measurement and modelling of tourism competitiveness; organizing, planning and management issues; tourism marketing; price competitiveness and demand elasticity; sustainability issues and case studies of tourism competitiveness from around the world. Along with an original introduction by the editors, this two-volume set is designed for scholars, students and practitioners interested in a deeper understanding of the nature of tourism competition and implications for tourism and destination management.
Geoffrey Wall Geoffrey has been accorded a Tianshan Award, ‘For outstanding service to economic and social development in Xinjiang’ by the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. He has been involved in a variety of aspects of tourism planning but the most time-consuming and important task has been providing assistance in the preparation of nomination documents for submission to UNESCO for designation of Xinjiang Taishan as a World Heritage site. It is hoped that formal designation of the World Heritage site will occur next year.
Larry Dwyer Larry has changed his status at the University of New South Wales. He traded off 0.6 of his salary to become a Research Professor, relinquishing all teaching and administrative responsibilities (except PhD supervision). In sum, he is 0.4 fractional Research Professor, a seamless transition to a better quality of life. Larry is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Ljubljana and has just returned from undertaking some collaborative research and conducting guest lecturers in Europe. Recent research includes
Muzaffer Uysal Muzaffer has co-authored the following papers in academic journals;
Muzaffer was invited by the Ministry of Education to serve as member of a team to review Higher Diploma in Tourism Management and Event Management for accreditation: ADVETI – Abu Dhabi (April 20-27, 2012. United Arab Emirates). He served as the chair for the visiting team and the team prepared a report on the review outcomes for the Ministry of Higher Education and Research of UEA. Muzaffer was a Visiting professor, June 30 – July 15, 2012, at University of Cagliari - Department of Economics and Business Studies, Cagliari, Sardinia – Italy and conducted two seminars: Seminar I. Tuesday, July 10, 2012 – Place: Oristano; New issues in tourism management - this seminar was attended mostly by students from Oristano University and some guests from the university and community. Seminar II - Thursday, July 12, 2012 – Place: Villasimius; Tourism development and sustainability in the community. His seminar presentation was part of a workshop that consisted of the following tree more individuals: Mayor of Villasimius, Salvatore Sanna, Bruno Paliaga, Director of Protected Coastal Area (PCA), and Roberto Ghessa, Sales Manager of Hotel Stellar Maris. The panel workshop was open to public. Serving as member of Conference Organizer Committee on Quality of Life and Tourism Research; Theories, Practices, Applications and Challenges, December 10-13, 2012, Brunico – Italy. I already reviewed 53 abstracts (one to two pages in length) for this conference. Serving as Scientific Committee member for the 13th National, Tourism Conference, December21-23, 2012. Pauline Sheldon "The Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI) will hold its seventh annual meeting April 13-16, 2013 in Oxford England. The theme this year is "Tourism Education For Global Citizenship: Educating for Lives of Consequence" and will be hosted by Oxford Brookes University - thanks to Fellow Chris Cooper. Two of our keynote speakers are Nigel Morgan, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Wales, UK and Anna Pollock, Conscious Travel, UK. If you are interested in presenting, attending or need more information please contact Pauline at psheldon@hawaii.edu. The conference will be held immediately after the SKOLL World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship at the Oxford University. We are planning synergistic events. TEFI faculty also visited Latin America in September this year to work with tourism educators from Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Ecuador identifying the challenges and opportunities they face moving into the future. Seminars to introduce faculty to the TEFI principles, goals and tools were held at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil as part of the CLAIT conference."
