Larry also gave a keynote address at European Maritime Day Conference "Coastal development and sustainable maritime tourism: an investment for blue growth" on Tuesday 21 May 2013 in Valletta, Malta. The event was sponsored by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.  His topic was "Fostering Competitiveness of coastal and marine tourism in Europe".

Don Hawkins

GW and the UNWTO Themis Foundation will offer the University course: Tourism and International Cooperation for Development offered on line from August 19 to September 27 and at the GW Campus in Washington DC from October 5 to 17, 2013. Chris Ryan

In 2013 Chris has been heavily involved in the launch of the China-New Zealand Tourism Research Council at the University of Waikato with a number of Chinese colleagues based at the China Tourism Academy and the universities of Sun Yat Sen, Beijing International Studies University, Beijing Union University, Ankang University, University of Hainan, Zhejiang International Studies University and Xi'an International Studies University. Industry funding for student awards have been gained and the first winner is Minghui Sun for her analysis of Chinese bloggers and their perceptions of New Zealand, an award funded by Christchurch International Airport and South Tourism Consortium. This has also involved working in co-operation with New Zealand organisations, and the public launch on March 25th was funded by Tourism Hamilton Waikato and took place just prior to the New Zealand's Prime Ministers visit to China - for which Chris provided a series of contacts given the theme of the visit was tourism and education.

Chris has additionally a new book emerging on tourism in China co-edited with Sam Huang from the University of South Australia and being published later in 2013 by Channel View Press. In addition he has a number of papers being published including one on a Chinese film tourism destination at a village, Wangcun, which changed its name to that of the film Hisbiscus Town, co-authored with Hazel Hao. The paper will be appearing in Annals of Tourism Research, while a more quantitative paper co-authored with Cora Wong is to be published in the Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing and is concerned with tourism in Putoushan. Chris will again be visiting Taiwan and the University of Hainan later this year while he also has engagements in Thailand - more of which in later newsletters.

Arch G. Woodside

Arch received the 2013 ICTHR Lifetime Achievement Award at the Biennial CPTHL Conference in Istanbul in June 2013, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the study of consumer psychology. Also, three papers were elected for the Arch Best Paper, Golden and Bronze Awards.
