Day School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, and was also recognized by Virginia Tech's Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management with Michael D. Olsen Outstanding Alumni Award.

Erik Cohen

Erik would like to draw the Fellows' attention to the attached article, which shows the position of Academy members within the network of leading tourism researchers.

He also wants to draw their attention to the growing greed of publishers: a leading publishing house has recently asked for a fee of more than 400.00 Euro for the right of translation of one of his articles into German. This constitutes a major block for the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Allan Williams

Allan has been awarded a research grant of £250,000 (c. US $400,000) by the UK's leading national research council, the Economic and Social Research Council. He will collaborate with Surrey colleagues, Professor Peter Jones, Professor Andrew Lockwood and Dr. Sangwon Park, to study labour productivity in UK hotels.

The research addresses two questions that are of central importance to debates about both the hospitality sector and the UK national economy. How does the employment of international migrant workers impact on productivity? And, how do flexible working practices influence productivity? The team will also investigate the interaction between flexible working practices, and the employment of migrants.

The research team will be co-operating closely with a leading Labour Management System provider Eproductive Ltd, who are facilitating privileged access to a uniquely rich data set for 80 hotels in the UK and the Netherlands. This data base provides information for all the departments and individual employees within these hotels, on an hourly or daily basis over a continuous six-year period that spans the 2008+ economic crisis. This data set will allow the team to undertake detailed time series analyses of the impacts on productivity of exogenous events such as the onset of global recession or the introduction of new immigration controls. It also provides data that will allow productivity to be analysed in both material and financial terms.

Allan, and Zhelyu Vladimirov of the University of Sofia have also jointly been awarded a £193,000 (c. US $309,000) Marie Curie intra-European research fellowship by the EU's FP7 programme to study the global competitiveness of tourism SMEs. Dr Vladimirov will be employed at Surrey for two to undertake a series of comparative international and sectoral analyses of competitiveness, using both secondary and survey data.
