David Airey

David, together with Dianne Dredge from the Aalborg University in Denmark and Michael Gross from the University of South Australia have edited a major text with the title "Routledge Handbook of Tourism and Hospitality Education" - publication date 25 September 2014 (http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415842051/). Its 570 pages and 39 chapters are described as providing a "timely, reflective and forward-looking critique of tourism and hospitality education and the forces impacting its development".

In September, David was in Hong Kong where he was working with Cathy Hsu on the preparation for the forthcoming quality audit of Hong Kong PolyU which will be carried out by the Hong Kong University Grants Committee, Quality Audit Council in 2016. As a part of this, they visited a number of centers in Mainland China where Hong Kong PolyU operates degree programs. While he was in Hong Kong he paid a visit to the Academy Offices in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management.

David retired from his position at the University of Surrey at the end of July 2014 and is now Emeritus Professor at Surrey. He first joined the University of Surrey nearly 40 years ago and after a spell working for the UK Government and the European Commission he returned to Surrey in 1997. Since then he has served as Head of School and Pro Vice-Chancellor before moving to a part-time position in 2009.

Dimitrios Buhalis

Dimitrios, together with Marcello M. Mariani, Rodolfo Baggio, and Christian Longhihas have edited a book titled "Tourism Management, Marketing, and Development: The Importance of Networks and ICTs". The book is available at Amazon: http://goo.gl/p1pevj

Richard Butler

Two members of the Academy, Tom Baum and Dick Butler have just had their edited book Tourism and Cricket - Travels to the Boundary published by Channelview Publications. The book explores the relationship between the game of cricket, its history, images, supporters, and grounds, and the travel involved. As well as chapters by Tom and Dick, Philip Pearce contributes a chapter to the book on Cricketers as Tourists.

Kaye Chon

Kaye organized and chaired 2nd International Forum on Tourism Education and Training together with 9th China Tourism Forum in Guilin, China, on 16-18 October 2014. Jigang Bao, Brian King and Haiyan Song also attended the Forum as speakers. He had the book "Leading the Way: The Story of SHTM and Hotel ICON published in celebration of his School's 35th anniversary.

Erik Cohen

Erik has received an award from Chiang Mai University for his contribution to the study of tourism in Thailand.

Erik and Scott A. Cohen are publishing a comparative study of non-Western tourism, with comments and our response in Current Issues in Tourism: "A mobilities approach to tourism from emergent world regions."  A pre-publication version can be found on http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/13683500.2014.898617

Geoffrey Crouch

Geoffrey was awarded OSP (sabbatical) leave for 2014. Over the past several months he has spent periods visiting the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland and the Université de Savoie in Chambéry, France.

David Edgell

David (Professor of Hospitality Leadership in the College of Human Ecology at East Carolina University) received the BoHS 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award. The award honors a nationally recognized leader in the Human Sciences who has a significant history of promoting and advancing the Human Sciences in higher education. David's background and experience in promoting positive tourism policies and programs include an explicit concern for poverty reduction and for the sustaining of natural and built resources throughout the world. His interdisciplinary approach in teaching, his research into the principles and practices of tourism through the medium of economics, sustainability, history, heritage, and culture has helped Human Science academicians and practitioners to better understand the impact the tourism industry has on global welfare, including the tourism-poverty nexus.  The full article can be found at www.TheBoHS.org.

Brian King

Along with Academy Fellows Kaye Chon and Haiyan Song, Brian made plenary presentations at sequential conferences held in October 2014 in Guilin (Guangxi Province, China). The first conference was the 8th UNWTO/PATA Forum on Tourism Trends and Outlook and the presentation title was Enhancing connectivity between education & career development in tourism. The second conference was co-hosted by Guilin Institute of Tourism and Hong Kong PolyU and was titled Experiental Learning in Hospitality and Tourism Education: Experiences from Four Continents.

In August 2014 He presented a keynote address Industry Innovations: A New Look & Feel for a New Generation of Travel at the Asia Conference of the Association of Conference Travel Executive (ACTE) inHong Kong.

He and his co-editor Elisa Backer have submitted the manuscript of a new book for publication (in 2015) By Channel View Visiting Friends & Relatives: Exploring the VFR Phenomenon.

Alan A. Lew

Alan (Northern Arizona University) received a two-year research grant from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation to examine relationships between sustainability and resilience in rural tourism communities of Taiwan. The research also involves comparisons to similar communities in Malaysia.

Philip Pearce

Since last reporting his activities, Philip is pleased to add that he has had a productive period of writing and supervising graduate students. He also knows some Fellows wished him well when he had significant surgery for prostate cancer but is pleased to simply say he is doing well and fully back at work.

Chris Ryan

Chris attended the Beijing Dialogue in October 2014 and gave two papers. His keynote speech examined the implications of big data sets for research approaches and he additionally outlined a project currently being undertaken on spatial patterns of Beijing's hotels and the research relationship with other datasets. Earlier this year he was the keynote speaker at the Asia Pacific Forum in Taiwan, the APAC-Chrie Conference in Malaysia and the Global Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference and Asia Tourism Forum in Hong Kong.  In addition, he gave the first presentation in the Inaugural Distinguished Scholars Presentation series at Zhejiang University on the 26th May for the Joint Doctoral Program between Zhejiang University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hangzhou.

He will also be a keynote speaker at the Chinese Dream Conference hosted by the Tourism Confucius Institute at Griffith University being held in conjunction with the G20 Summit on the Gold Coast, Australia.

He has had a series of papers accepted and published this year in Tourism Management, Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel Research, Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research and Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change. 

Earlier he undertook a report for the UNWTO Monitoring Station based at Sun Yat Sen University on tourism development in Xinshuangbanna-Dai Prefecture, which report was accepted by the Yunnan Government, and in 2015 will take Maori colleagues to the region to discuss issues pertaining to ethnic minority cultural property rights.

In December 2014 he is hosting the 11th New Zealand Tourism and Hospitality Tourism Conference some 20 years after he initiated the series at Massey University in 1994. The conference is held once every 2 year.

Muzzo coedited the following two books:

Geoff Wall

Geoff (University of Waterloo, Canada) is the recipient of a Friendship Award which was presented to him by Vice Premier Ma Kai at the Great hall of the People in Beijing, as part of China's National Day celebrations. "The People's Republic of China Friendship Award" is "China's highest award for foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country's economic and social progress".

Allan Williams

Allan, with Teemu Makkonen from South Denmark university, has been awarded an EU Marie Curie fellowship. This will fund Dr. Makkonen to be employed for two years as a research fellow at Surrey from October 2014. They will be working on a series of projects related to cross border innovation systems.
