Philip Pearce

In the last 18 months, Philip has co-authored work with colleagues from Iran, England, Mauritius, Indonesia, China and Singapore. Themes have been tourist behavior and experience, tourist attraction design and management, some pieces on methodology and community development. Of course the listed work appearing below was largely written in 2016 whereas his current writing has more about humour, tourist motivation, emtions and specialist markets. Yet to be published work includes the papers from APAChrie conference in Bali where a Best paper award was won with his PhD student Teddy Wen on astronomy tourism as a specialist market. Philip hopes to see some Academy colleagues at CAUTHE (Newcastle, Australia) in February 2018 and the Tourism Forum conference in Mallorca, Spain in March 2018. Older 2016 work as well as 2017 publications can be accessed via James Cook University Research online or on request to him personally.

Chris Ryan

Chris has been taking the last couple of months to recover from a bad bout of flu in New Zealand, and then catch up with all the work that accrued during that period.

He hopes that by the time this update is published, the second report on the visitors to the Terracotta Warriors Museum in Xi'an will have been completed in both English and Mandarin, while data has also been collected from visitors to the Fuxi Mausoleum, less well known outside of China, but still a place of Buddhist pilgrimage. Currently Chris is helping New Zealand colleagues with their research assessment portfolios (in New Zealand individual researchers are assessed). At the time of writing he is in the UK and has been visiting various universities and publishers. In consequence, when visiting Professor Nigel Morgan at Swansea University, Nigel commented, does that mean 2018 will see a flow of Ryan publications? A start is being made for while in the UK, with two recent acceptances for publication later in 2018.

Chris also wishes all members of the Academy a restful Christmas period.
